editing software and getting stuff to it

So far I've made flash animations and imported them into Primere for editing. I have After Effects and imovie too, but haven't really used them too much. I bought a cheap USB device for importing video into the computer, but I never got it to work well. It would capture slowly, and when I installed it it made my sound programs not work.

What software do you like to use? (i like primere a lot)
what type of computer do you use? (i use a mac)
and how do you get video into your computer?

I also used a computer in a computer lab to import through RCA cables into Primere and then ftp to my computer, but I want to be able to do it myself. can anyone recommend any good (fairly cheap) RCA to firewire (or USB) converters?

I don't. I have an old PowerBook G3 (Wall Street) without RCA, USB, or FireWire inputs. It has some kind of video input but I've yet to figure out exactly what type, and how I might use it with my DVD player so I can get screen grabs.

Any advice is eagerly solicited.

Stay away for USB; it's no good for video, at least not yet. FireWire is the way to go.

I edit on a G4, and I'm deeply in love with Final Cut Pro (I'm using v. 3) right now. I capture straight into the program with my FW connection; I used to use my camera for it, though it's really really bad to use your video camera as a VTR, especially if sees any steady use. So I use a Panasonic AG-DV1000 deck right now, which cost a pretty penny. Hopefully the price of these things will go down.

(a converter that can go both from VHS to .mov file and from .mov file to VHS?)

I mean stay away FROM USB.

What does the mysterious video editing input look like, Amateurist?

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I heard that about USB, but the one I got was the cheapest converter around.

Also, what exactly is a "Wall Street" PowerBook?

So this is basically an analog-to-digital converter? Do you shoot on VHS? I'd suggest you RCA to a digital video camera (if you can borrow one from someone) and dump your footage onto a miniDV or Digital8 tape, then FW it into your computer. I know my deck can skip the recording-to-tape step (ie it can input from analog & output digital simultaneously) but I'm not sure how many cameras can do that; if you can find one that can, you can avoid having to buy a tape.

"Wall Street" PowerBooks were the first generation of PB G3s, before USB became standard.

What I did when I was younger was plan ahead a bunch and just record everything in time on to mini tapes in the camera. The editing involved only recording the video camera playing the tape and the sound going through a mixer with music, and this all going into a VCR and recording onto a VHS. It was simple, but very limiting. I want to now do more editing on a computer and be able to output onto VHS (and maybe DVD if I get a DVD burner)

Yeah, I remember the bad old days of camera-to-VCR.

Amateurist, as long as you have some kind of video input, there is a box that will link a VHS/DV deck/DVD player to your mac. I can't remember the name or spec, but it's in the back of most Mac magazines-goes for a couple of hundred $$$, though.
