The Chanel commercial with Nicole Kidman...

Has anyone seen this? Apparently, it's been around for a while, but it only recently caught my attention. Anyway, it's absolutely fantastic! The best thing you'll see on tv all year. Only convinces me further that commercials and trailers, once freed from their dubious functions, are completely worthy of academic appreciation. They're clearly the most direct modern descendant of silent cinema.

haha, i couldn't agree less. i think it's awful. the editing is bad and i HATE the way she says "i love to dance!".

How do you figure the editing is BAD? Because it's not the traditional one-frame-after-another comic strip style?

Anthony (Anthony F), Saturday, 19 November 2005 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

this is directed by baz luhrman (sp). it's a bit ridiculous and the editing is bad but that's because that's an edited version; when it first came out it was longer, they trimmed it way the hell down (by like half) and now it doesn't make sense. I also hate the way she says she loves to dance, but I love her anyway.

I can't disagree with the "bad editing" thing more. I prefer the shortened version.

I love the dreaminess of the piece, the way the images unfold like a stream of conciousness, with certain key images- the leads catching each other's glimpses in the cab, the kiss against the backdrop of the fireworks- acting as a sort of narrative shorthand.

It's obviously a bit more abstract than your average promo, but nothing so downright avant-garde that it could be misinterpreted as nonsensical.

And yes, it is ridiculous, but this piece is pure sensual indulgence. I couldn't care less about the narrative, especially when it's trying to sell me fucking perfume.

In regards to my last post, I'm speaking of the 2 minute version. I thought that was the shorter version, but now I feel like I'm wrong.

Is this online anywhere?

i think the editing is bad because it's awkward and inelegant not because "it's not the traditional one-frame-after-another comic strip style" you patronising dick.

well it turns out i was watching a less than a minute long version, which really IS bad. the 2 minute version i've just downloaded is better but i still don't like it. kidman is pretty annoying and its just a string of cliché's. the cliché's are so condensed into it's short time frame that it almost transcends them, but not quite. i still find it quite embarrassing to watch, especially the "i love to dance" bit which really jars in the super short version. the shot of kidman's dress as she runs out of the car is really good though.

here's a YSI of the 2 minute version.

anthony, i'm sorry for swearing at you. we were talking at cross purposes but that's no excuse.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 20 November 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry about it.

I figured not many people would like this as much as I do. Your right about it being a string of cliches, but I love that kind of stuff, especially when it doesn't take itself too seriously (which this piece doesn't). I have a real admiration for anything phony and ridiculous (it's an art form unto itself), and it just amazes me that they managed to cram so much cheese into two minutes. Love it.

Thanks for the YSI, the iFilm version was taped off some morning program.

two years pass...

They're still showing this. So it seems it's 3 years old!

the pinefox, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:43 (sixteen years ago)

I've always liked this advert but I don't understand the story - why does NK having to appear at a premiere mean that she has to abandon her crush? It doesn't follow at all.

the pinefox, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:43 (sixteen years ago)

I know this advert is still on cos I have been watching WILL & GRACE this morning. That's still on too!

the pinefox, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:58 (sixteen years ago)

god, this is the worst
