I've recently been in love with all things small town, american, beautifully shot, great music and indie in films and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some more like this?

My love at the moment are films like:
The unbelievable truth
The station agent
Sling blade
George Washington

(and even red rock west, although i prefer the more poigniant films?)

Many thanks in advance everyone!

Does anybody care to explain the love The Station Agent seems to get in some quarters? I found it to be a very very mediocre movie. By the book indie. Why all the love? Why???

If you call "The Station Agent" mediocre it means that you are anti-midget. Not many people want to have that accusation levelled at them.

Lawn Dogs
Trust & Simple Men (since Hartley's mentioned twice above)
Bodies, Rest and Motion
Breaking Away

The Straight Story is fantastic! Farnsworth should have won an Oscar for that movie.

Shadow of a Doubt, though it doesn't fit the mood of a lot of these, matches the "small town" qualification.

The Station Agent was a little better than mediocre, but not much. Good performances, sweet, etc. but nothing special.

The Apostle is a must.
Cool Hand Luke might also kind of fit what you want.

Odds Against Tomorrow is a fifties era film noir with Harry Belafonre playing a role and music. Dark tale of crime and racism, and good street location shots. Excellent movie!
I second on "All the Real Girls"
