im gonna do some filming on super 8, then editing from video. bearing in mind i dont mind a drop in qaulity too much, would it be better/easier to get the film developed, then transferred to video on a telecine machine, OR get a projector and just video the projection and edit from that??

any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The trouble with just pointing your video camera at a projection screen is that you have to shoot it at an angle, and therefore have to frame out the edges of your image. I've rigged up an ingenious device with a two-way mirror and a box, which is basically what a telecine device is, but it's a big ol' hassle. It depends how fussy you are...

The main issue you're going to have is flicker. The projector isn't going to be the same frame rate as your camera is recording at, so the image will flicker. If that's not a big deal, I say go for it! Telecine is usually fairly expensive considering, so I'd only recommend that if you really want the quality.

Also, you have nothing to lose by trying it. If you don't like the results, tweak and try again or go telecine route.

If you can get (or borrow) a four-blade projector, you won't get any flicker.
