Jim McBride's Glen and Randa

I had this sitting around for a while and finally decided to check it out. Damn! This is an underground masterpiece that desperately needs to be rediscovered. The "plot" involves the curious philosopher Glen and the playful Randa, who've been described as "a post-apocalyptic Adam and Eve," searching for Metropolis (which Glen discovers in a comic book). An early scene goes something like this:

Wandering a woodsy area, Randa discovers a rusted car high up in a treetop. She and Glen ascend the tree to check it out. Inside the car, they find an advertisement for a used car lot, with pictures of endless rows of brand new cars.

Glen: What do you see outside?
Randa: Trees.
G: And what did you see in the picture?
R: Cars.
G: And what are we in?
R: A car in a tree.
G: No, a car BECOMING a tree... Were you ever looking down at a leaf and all of a sudden a butterfly came flying out of it? Well, maybe it's the same way with cars. Maybe cars become trees the same way leaves become butterflies. Maybe this whole place was once 'the biggest used car lot in Blackfoot County.'

The whole film is made up of little fascinating scenes like this one. The conclusion is one of the most complex depictions of simultaneous heartbreak and hope that I've ever seen.

The Magician is a great character ("Why eat raw bread?"), played by Gary Goodrow, who was a member of The Committee, SF's big improv comedy troupe.

I have to think George Miller saw this, it's like a (much) less motorized Mad Max 2 for the first half-hour. Junkyard endtimes.
