The Death of Mr Lazarescu

Just wondered if anyone has had a chance to see this, doing the roundsat festivals for almost a year now with great press. But there appears to be no US release as yet - the internet seems to think it gets a screening in NYC sometime during April.

Still it sounds good, dark elegaic tragicomedy feasting on the bones of Ceausescu.

Yep, I'm looking forward to it:

it is a long, hard slog. i liked it very much but i can't imagine ever sitting through it again.

Did you see at the film festival, Mark? Did you see the Bettie Page movie? Or the Michael Snow movie?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Did you see "Regular Lovers"?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i saw it at tiff! didn't see the bettie page story or regular lovers tho, and i didn't even know snow had a new movie!

other things i saw: l'enfant, the great yokai war (miike), sympathy for lady vengeance, thumbsucker and a few others i cannae remember. lazarescu was v. good, i don't mean to dissuade anyone, but there's a wrenching slowness to it. (the film is about the inefficiencies of the romanian healthcare system and it's 150mins long, so you can guess what it does...)

I lived in NYC for a brief while and I love Film Forum, but the NYC-centric distribution patterns for below-the-radar stuff really bugs me. It's the same in London but of course as a Londoner you take it for granted - you can stay in one place and everything (almost too much sometimes) comes right to you. In a place like SF, you have to wait for something to show up and grab it before it escapes like a precious salmon.

Enough with the allegories, I'm just bitching again...

On the very few things I've seen, I'm not a fan of Takashi Miike at all, but what was the film like?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I want to see the Bettie Page thing even though it got so-so reviews. I like Mary Harron.

the miike movie was a dud. it started off as a cute little fairy tale but it got marred by bad special effects and a stupid third act.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks! I definitely won't be seeing it. :)

Lazarescu is one of the best things I saw last year.

Regular Lovers too!

It is a "long hard slog", but it really pays off I think.

three months pass...
Anyone else seen? Apparently tomorrow's the last day at Film Forum, so it looks like tonight for me.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Shit, missed it too and had all intentions of seeing it. Maybe tomorrow.

It's starting at Cinema Village Friday. I liked it but by no means a masterpiece -- the flaws rather neatly dissected here (tho I'm more in the 7/10 range):

OK then, that frees up three hours of my time tonight.

This still ties with La Libertad as best new movie I've seen in the 00s, imo.

good, but excruciatingly long. which may be the point, but still it's a slog.

also, am i a bad person for having sympathy for at least some of the doctors here? personally, i have little patience for non-lawyers playing "backseat lawyer" so i extend the same courtesy to other "learned professionals." and that can't help but spill over when i watch films like this one.
