Where's it at?

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it at the Quad last week. I thought it was incredible. It was the first film I've seen by these guys, so I'm not sure how it compares to their other works, but I love how gritty and "real-life" it was. I also like the cathartic, but also ambiguous ending.. Bruno may very well return to his life of petty thiefing, but he seemingly matured at least on an emotional level. The whole thing packs a very potent punch, and I at times felt really bad for Bruno because he's like a child himself.. he's incredibly self serving sure, but I think he's just naive. he doesn't realize the gravity of his actions. Anyway, I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.. so yeah...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 31 March 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

Lots to like -- they are the current kings of post-neorealism -- but I hafta say I didn't buy the last 2 scenes. The Son is still their best.

SPOILER

I expected Bruno to sell the kid a second time.

I was a little dissapointed. It felt a lot like a replay of La Prommesse with lower stakes. It's been a few months since I saw it and most of the film has completely slipped my mind. I should take another look.

Morbius, refresh my memory; what were the last two scenes?

I'm probably seeing this tonight. I like the bros Dardennes quite a bit, I'm looking forward to this.

The best scenes include Bruno in the cellar while you can hear the guy
counting the cash, and that last prolonged chase.

Also watch Rosetta by the Dardennes'; its a brutal and honest film

OPPENHEIMER, Friday, 7 April 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
I've seen all of their films (minus the documentaries) now, and this one is probably their best. It rivals Bresson -- that's how good this film is. I was depressed when Kieslowski died. The Dardenne brothers have given me new hope....

No thread for The Kid with the Bike?

Not bad. For once their naturalism didn't seem like cruel tricks on the characters.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 April 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i liked.

SPOILLEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

i didn't so much like the father & sun displaying a satisfying lack of compassion at the end, like we needed more of a reason to root for the kid. i loved it more as a parable that we can't be separated from shit we've done than a demonstration that everyone's an asshole.

A lot of us in a similar situation might protect their kid in the same way that the father did -- a sharp contrast b/w Cyril and his old man.

LOL, two threads on the one film, no threads on the filmmakers.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's "L'Enfant"

Start one!

I'll see Bike with as open a mind as I can muster. L'enfant remains my least favorite of the Dardennes movies I've seen. The Son is pretty great.

saw Bike yesterday. it's.. very Dardenne brothers. I liked it and it did remind me of The Son. there is something I really like about their style, the way the camera moves and how there are all these small cars and bikes moving around and out of the frame. and you can still hear the cars and other noises even when they're not shown, like a swarm of bees kind of. like the end of Rosetta with the guy following her on the motorbike.

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Saturday, 7 April 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

I want more movies that are less about "performances" and more about action plz

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 April 2012 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

i love how curious i was to see this, hearing that it was their 'light' movie, & how i spent the first hundred minutes brutally crushed, the way you are w/all their films, at how terrible everything seeemed. light being a relative term.
