Brick - anyone else seen this yet?

I saw Brick over the weekend and it was the first movie in ages that's stuck with me. Pulp-noir-meets-high-school isn't a particularly new idea, but despite the dialog it didn't feel particularly retro or consciously ironic. Couple of scenes had that "first time director" look, but honestly I'd rather see sometime different that doesn't quite make it versus the some-ol cliche factory.

This year's Donnie Darko?

yes, it's quite good! completely convoluted plot, of course, but very well done and extremely well-acted and very entertaining.

It seemed like they were trying for a Morriconesque theme for every character but it was so loud that it got on my nerves.

I want to see it again though.

three weeks pass...

This is the first film I've seen that's directly inspired by Miller's Crossing. This should be a good thing, since Miller's Crossing is arguably the greatest thing since the invention of the kinetoscope. Unfortunately, the mannered dialog that is so appealing when spoken by prohibition-era gangsters and dames just doesn't work in a modern-day high school setting. It almost felt like I was watching an exercise in film technique instead of an actual film. Having said that, I loved the plotting of the film. The actors were good, and there was some nice humor in the film. Job well done for $350K. I would put money on Rian Johnson's future.

i need to see this again.

i really hated how the characters had to talk so quietly and mumble and slur all the clever dialogue so it was more stylized

but i still liked this movie a lot. i thought the noir in high school device was pretty cool.

Part of it's age and tinnitis, but I appreciated having the closed captioning for this movie. The dialogue is tight, and worth reading. I liked it quite a bit. Well-done and stylized, taking the film noir cliches and placing them well into the high school setting.

Particularly liked the fight between Levitt and the football player - realistic and punishing - and the fact that Levitt carries the damage from his fights throughout the film.

The actors were, seemingly, directed to mangle the dialogue. A real disappointment.

I really dug this movie. I thought the direction and acting were both GREAT. I usually can't stand Joseph Gordon Levitt, but he was more than bearable in this movie...he was actually good. I love seeing a return to film noir! Not trying to spam, but my buddies and i did a podcast about brick back in September:

Also if you liked this movie you should really check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Same type of Noir feel to it.

This was slicker than I expected, but just as grotesque and pointless. A shame to waste a great noir line like "Which wall's the door in?" in a high-school play level of verisimilitude.

Saw it when it came out on DVD, very dissapointed. Glad I didn't spend the money for it in the theatres.

Well, it's no Donnie Darko, which is in Brick's favor: Darko just spun around and around, and its pseudo-physics bullshit never made any sense. My hipster friends seemed to like it more for its soundtrack. Of course, they still scoffed in disbelief whenever anyone said they didn't it. All the same, the dialogue in Brick is Mamet-lite and never rises above its obviously stylized stiltedness. It's been a while since I saw it though - I didn't think it was a disaster, or even bad - I'm just rather indifferent. I agree with the original post - it's at least exciting to see someone try something new with the genre. Even if, at times, it seems contrived.

I didn't enjoy the film. It just wasn't believable to me. However, I have only seen it once maybe a second viewing will make me come around since the dialogue was too quick.

i figured it was like the newer shakespeare re-imaginings, i.e. "romeo + juliet" and "othello" in high school. i liked it but i think i liked it more when i was watching it than i do now, it doesn't leave much to hold onto beyond being an enjoyable genre experiment.
