saturday night and sunday morning

I saw this film on video yesterday and thought it was a great, compact
piece of work. Sort of a less uplifting Saturday Night Fever; beautifully shot in black and white. I'd never seen Albert Finney in anything pre-Annie either. The back of the case made it sound like one of a string of 60's british cinema classics of a similar ilk; do people know more??

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was one of a string of "Kitchen Sink" dramas from the late 50s/early 60s. Some suggestions...

A Taste of Honey (my fave)
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
This Sporting Life

There are probably a lot of people who know more about this than I do that can provide some additional suggestions and info.

Most of them weren't very good.

Billy Liar is the best, by a mile.

Ahhhh... The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner... great movie.

I don't think of "Billy Liar" in the same way, somehow. It's just less "gritty" than the ones Nicole mentioned, I guess. But it is a wonderful thing indeed.

"A taste of honey" seems to be quite poorly regarded these days (unlike 15 years ago when it was de rigeur viewing for any discerning Smiths' fan), but I'm very fond of it. I like "Up the junction" a lot as well.

Thanks everybody! As for this movie in particular, I'm trying to articulate what I think of it relative to the other disgruntled-young-man pictures I've seen ... What I think is true is that I like these movies more if the main character's hostility is less explicitly tied to possible causes, (but already SNF which I like a lot doesn't fit this).

"The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' is pretty creaky I think.

But classic just for the 'HE GOES AFTER GIRLS! HE GOES AFTER GIRLS!" moment.

I haven't seen that movie in 15(!) years. But I remember it being pretty good.

A Taste of Honey is one of my favorite films ever. No, I'm not Morrissey.
