What Nicolas Roeg films (if any) do you recommend after Bad Timing?

I have been in a Nicolas Roeg zone the last few weeks and am wondering what films are worth checking out after having seen Walkabout, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Don't Look Now and Bad Timing? Seems like the general consensus among many people I know is that his stuff is passable after that, although I am thinking there must have been some other slivers of brilliance after his strong work of the 70's? Any ideas?

All i can recall seeing is The Witches (fun) and his TV film of Heart of Darkness (meh).

I assume you've seen Performance. Eureka's supposed to be decent enough, I think.

Thanks Alex, No I hadn't seen performance but I was browsing through the video store last night and noticed they rereleased it on DVD so I picked it up.Solid overall if you're up for a 60's cult rock film with lots of drugs, sex, clever editing, and Mick Jagger in a weird menage a trois. The editing and the photography are what really carry the film, intersplicing the most random images into the narrative and still keeping it relevant. Good for laughs, good soundtrack, but somewhow it just seems hollow compared to his other work, but thats probably how he meant it to be.

Paul Schrader and many others say masterpiece, I'll hafta watch again w/ the subtitles on.

C'mon, 'Performance' has to be in the running for the best British film ever: "I like a bit of a cavort", 'Memo from turner', the Last Poets . . what's not to like?

I'll watch it again tonight and see if I can make more sense of it. In watching it I was reminded of "Persona". Yeah Soukesian, the soundtrack is great no doubts there. I didn't know that this was originally Cammell's vision and Roeg was just taken on as DP, then he was later made co-director.What are your interpretations on the ending? I see some similarities to Blow- Up's ending on a note of ambiguity.

oscar, Saturday, 17 March 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

Absolutely Blow-Up is a close second in terms of 60's fab-ness and very close in feel. The key thing is the clash between mod gangnsters and hippy mystics. Roeg made more better movies, so I have no trouble seeing the film as his.

When, oh, when are these going to be available on DVD? I remember seeing "O, Lucky Man" on cable when I was ten and it scared the shit out of me.

I really wanted to like "Eureka," but I thought it was incomprehensible. That said, "Bad Timing" is my favorite.

what was scary about OLM?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

The sheep head scene, my friend. The sheep head scene.

I can laugh about it now, but at age ten, it was seriously disturbing.

William Selman, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't realise those two movies weren't on DVD.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

The sheep bit is just crazy. You see the foot first. The whole movie is just so uncompromisingly self-indulgent and weird.

I think Ken Russell did better than Roeg for late work: 'Salome', 'Gothic' and 'Lair of the White Worm' are all just great in their diverse ways.

Soukesian, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

IF is being released on Criterion, and with their track record I am sure it will be fantastic.Watching Eureka tonight, hoping that it is amusing at least, even if it isn't that good. The Roeg I've seen usually keeps my eyes glued to the screen.

Sorry, it wasn't a sheep head, but a sheep's body. See...still traumatized...
