This thread was inspired because of a Japanese flick I saw recently called Tampopo by Juzo Itami. First off, if u haven't seen this already go check it now! It's a western, a samurai film, an off beat comedy, a drama, a satire, a satire of satire, a movie for food buffs and genre benders. There are tons of references thrown back and forth between John Ford, Spaghetti Westerns, Kurosawa Samurai flicks, classic gangster films and even a bit of Monty Python bits. But it doesn't really matter if u don't "get" all the cineaste in jokes, this movie is all about fun and is smart enough to not let the references get in the way of the flow of the experience. I was thinking there needs to be more movies nowadays that defy genre by either deftly combining them or giving the big fuck you to genre boundaries. So I was thinking let's list movies that mix a minimum of 4 genres or are so fucked in their genre bending that they are unclassifiable. I know this definition may seem vague but hey if u think it fits, list it!
My first pick is "Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia". It's a western, a romance, an action movie, a horror film, a road movie, a revenge story, a black comedy and a tragedy all rolled into one.

Was that why Tampopo was so hot? I saw it as a teenager and couldn't figure out why all the buzz for what seemed like a fairly ho-hum film.

The blending of genres might be a typical Japanese phenomenon. Miike Takashi makes it difficult to classify his movie The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001): family comedy, surreal Fawlty Towers, love story, musical, ecological horror, disaster movie. I will not give away the drastic stylistic change at the end of the movie - seeing is believing. One of the (almost accurate) taglines is: ‘The Sound of Music meets Dawn of the Dead’.
