Films about the creative process

A few months ago, I picked up a bunch of dirt cheap VHS titles, and coincidentally, they were all about the creative process in different ways: American Movie, Barton Fink, The Wizard of Speed and Time, Mother, and Bowfinger. It never occurred to me before, but I suppose I'm sort of drawn to movies of this type - they're actually quite inspiring to me. What other movies of this type do you like, and do they inspire you? Do you feel the warm fuzzies when Chubby Rain or Coven have their film premieres, or at the end of Mother when *SPOILER* Al Brooks' mother begins to write again?

La belle noiseuse (The Beautiful Troublemaker) is about a painter who wants to do his one last masterpiece, then quit. The whole film is about the making of that painting. It lasts for four hours, so it's quite a durability test, but in the end the film is very rewarding, and has lot to say about the creative process.

Adaptation had nice moments that anyone whose ever tried and failed to write/create something could relate to.

Phil -- good choices. Just saw the Wilco film, very interesting. Phillip Seymour Hoffman should play that guy who was fired from the band if the ever make a bio pic on the subject.

Life Lessons is one of my favourite things by Scorsese.

Films about the creative process are a bit peeve of mine. Films about filmmaking are the worst of all. I can't even bear to watch Truffaut's Day for Night and I love Truffuat.

i guess 8 1/2 is the crown jewel of these, totally, but also adaptation and a bunch of woody allen films (stardust memories, deconstructing harry, hollywood ending).....

i like Barton Fink the best, because of the self deprecation of the artists.

i also think the Player deserves to be included.

In Hollywood the Producer is king [and creative(?) force]!

"Barton Fink" is exempt from my scorched earth policy on the basis that it is about other things as well.

"Basquiat" is one of the direst films I've ever endured in my entire life.

'The Quince Tree Sun' or something like that. About a guy trying to paint a picture of a tree. Kind of like 'The Plank' for arty types. Can't remember the name of the director or indeed the artist, but you can certainly get it on that 'World Cinema' label that has green covers. One of my favourite films. I was hoping art classes would be like this, but no.

I thought 'Basquiat' was good, but the book 'Widow Basquiat' is a million times better.
