Favourite of these 80's movies that are on TCM quite often

Bad Influence was released on 9 March 1990 and so is technically not an 80's movie, but it still feels like an 80's movie, I think

Mystic Pizza should say 1988, not 1989.

Diner easily. Bad Influence is okay trash. Working Girl has good bits. The rest are trash.

Yeah Diner by far. Eight Men Out is quite good but yeah the rest are terrible. Would be interested in seeing The Whales of August

I've only seen 4 of these (Alfred otm, plus 8MO is probably the most overrated baseball film of all time)

Remember enjoying Mystic Pizza more than expected but couldn't tell you why.

Aw, I love all of these movies, I didn't think people would be so down on them. Does no one else like Taps?

Any movie that's about young people transitioning into adulthood, and getting swept up into a romantic idea of adult life with maybe dangerous consequences, I'm a sucker for any sort of movie based around that theme, and Taps delivers. But their project is a childish fantasy of adult life, it's actually the opposite of facing up to/transitioning to adult life and that's why I find it moving, I think? And Tom Cruise is so good at playing creeps and arseholes, I don't think I've ever seen him not be great in a role where he's playing a jerk.

Eight Men Out is sort of like this as well? John Cusack's character, with this childish belief in this noble, fantasy world of sportsmanship, you see him chatting with the 'say it ain't so, Joe' kid. Like, it's sort of touching, but he shown to be essentially a child, almost pathetic.

Are these films middlebrow? I worry about liking middlebrow things, sometimes.

i'm far too aware that 8MO is not the way it happened to like it, on top of everything else

(the book it's based on, published in '63, has been pretty discredited as history at this point)

I don't know the first thing about baseball, maybe that's why I enjoy the movie.

It's not bad, just dull and Oscar-worthy. Davis aged worse than Gish, surprisingly.
