This is very cool, the missing scenes from the 1927 classic silent film were discovered in Argentina. A new restoration of the film is now in the works (plot holes filled, minor characters turning into major characters, etc).

...and then I see this was already mentioned yesterday in the silent film thread on ILE. Carry on.

I'm glad someone hasn't given up ILF for dead, but it's a losing battle.

Didn't the last restoration add the terrible seven deadly sins allegory? I'm thinking shorter might be better and that scenes got cut by distributors for good reason. i guess it's good in a historical sense blah blah blah but i just want to watch the matte paintings really. also, the long version of spies is a mess.

I might be wrong, but I heard that they just found the full "director's cut" clocking at 3 hours or something. Hopefully criterion will get on this.

it's tighter than your mom's.
Simon Callow writes in his Welles bio that Ambersons to Welles' desires might not have been all that flawless (ie, Tim Holt).

Having read many times about how "Metropilis" is cut down loads from the original domestic version, about different interpretations of how the existing footage joins together, about how the original cut is lost forever etc, I don't think there's any way that this isn't fantastic news, even if the full cut does drag a bit. I mean who would have thought this would ever turn up?
No doubt this will get put out on DVD pretty soon (would rather have a good DVD of Lubitsch' "Madame Du Barry" & "Carmen" in all honesty, but still, will buy this like a shot if/when it comes out)
Like the Dutch guy with his copy of "Beyond the Rocks" or the 2 Colleen Moore comedies in the Italian archive, stuff like this can't help but make you hope that other things will turn up too. Like realistically, it's fantastically unlikely that a complete print of "The Divine Woman", "Flaming Youth" or "Gold Diggers of Broadway" will ever show up, but then, realistically, it was fantastically unlikely that this would show up either. One can dream.
