Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth, woah

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes, woah

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here, before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far, woah

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Rolling teenpop got trollbombed again so Dave had the mods lock it for good, not wanting to have to tattle on the trolls every month or so. Dave and Mordy say that I shouldn't look at this as the bullies winning, but I think that's a very good way of looking at it, actually, though obviously the situation is more complex than that simple statement. Really, ending the thread just ratified a situation that was long in place, which is that most of the smart people have decided that ilX is no longer worth fighting for, so they're no longer around to contribute to the tone of the place. Dave and I both had been willing to let the thread die at the end of 2007, and it had already lost some of its sparkle by the end of 2006.

Dave says "we have found something that's post-poptimistically maligned with the same vehemence as 'disco sucks' (basically most of what we're calling teenpop) and I still think it's an important conversation to be had, just not where p3dophile jokes are the funniest thing ever."

I agree; not only is teenpop worth discussing, so's the emotional disturbance we caused by discussing it seriously, though I wouldn't want to read too much into the fact that we were under attack. Bullies attack teenpop because they can, and they attacked us because they could, just as they attacked Paris Hilton because they could. Bullies like to hurt people, and they don't need deep reasons, just a target.

In any event, if you've never given it a look, rolling teenpop 2006 and the beginning of rolling teenpop 2007 were glorious.

tbf, paedophile jokes are not the funniest thing ever. Smash Mouth lyrics polls are, paedophile gags are second.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

the funny thing is that i was actually asking about the hannah montana thing not trolling. everyone was rolling their eyes at me and ignoring me for NOT KNOWING why hannah montana is miley cyrus' "alter ego" wtf.

chaki, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

i think everyone over the age of 12 is confused by that

omar little, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

not knowing that is symptomatic of ilX's ongoing intellectual and moral decline

dan m, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

Chaki, I was rolling my eyes at you because your question was answered in the first paragraph of the wikipedia article I linked and when you posted that you were still confused, I thought you were fucking around.

First they came for the spoiled heiresses
and I did not speak out
because I was not a spoiled heiress.
Then they came for the one-hit wonders
and I did not speak out
because I was not a one-hit wonder.
Then they came for the Disney pop star
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Disney pop star.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

the end result of this is that several of the most intelligent music lovers on the ILM board have left because some douchebag hipsters decided to troll a thread about music they have never listened to and know nothing about.

Enjoy the lyrics polls and funny pictures of Smash Mouth, I guess. If I want lulz I'll go to 4chan; I wanted intelligent music discussion and for a while the board had it.

how the fuck do you know if i have or have not listened to ashlee simpson or hannah montana, you poonana?

chaki, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:44 (seventeen years ago)

because you think only pedophiles listen to them.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

being pro-4chan doesn't help

electricsound, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

and by the way, chaki's trolling was easily the least noxious I've seen on the Teenpop threads. But it was still really stupid.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

my point is that ILX is rapidly becoming 4chan, and this is a bad thing.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

the only real problem I have with Kogan et al is that they actually use the word "poptimist."

p.s. my post on the teenpop thread (posted before chaki's) wasn't intended as trolling, I'm sorry if it seemed flippant or disrespectful.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

Rolling Debutante Boston Thread 2008

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

anyway its the dude that started the thread that decided to lock it which i found weird since the trolling was like less than 1% of the posts.

chaki, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

the problem i have is their posts/essays either sucked the joy out of pop music or it comes off like fanclub bullshit, analyzing every little thing the teenpoppers do in fawning posts, lolling approvingly at every quote that hinted at the faintest, most slender sliver of wit. but then again that was a problem with those dudes' writings all across the board, not just on teenpop. at least the former was. the latter was teenpop specific.

omar little, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah Matt I won't deny the erudition and quality of writing, but don't mistake sophistry for substance.

inscrutable

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

the end result of this is that several of the most intelligent music lovers on the ILM board have left because some douchebag hipsters decided to troll a thread about music they have never listened to and know nothing about.

most of the teenpoppers seemed basically enclaved there by the end. did kogan post elsewhere on ilx? he doesn't seem to have in years, and omar's characterization of that thread -- i'm not talking about kogan's other work -- is otm.

they may be 'intelligent music lovers', but that thread was not. it was abject stuff, and in any case asking for a lockdown because of a couple of zings is thin-skinned. there've always been zingers. my hunch is that the whole thing was getting embarrassing and they needed to pull away.

banriquit, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the insight there, Quincy.

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'm going to go off and have a BIG CRY now.

some of us take this board seriously but whatthefuckever "brah".

banriquit, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

headache-inducing, this.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get the big deal. I pulled the cord because the thread had been pretty dead for awhile and was mostly just a place for trolling. Nothing wrong with trolling on a vibrant, packed thread. But what's the point of keeping the poor thing alive? Frank and dabug basically said they wouldn't mind it being shutdown, and I certainly wasn't participating on it much anymore - so I gave my okay to the lock.

Seriously, things end. No big deal and no one's fault for it. This isn't particularly tragic or hysterical.

Mordy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

level headed response, mordy. hi5.

chaki, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

mordy is cool, sorry for past zings

gershy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

my hunch is that the whole thing was getting embarrassing and they needed to pull away.

Yeah. Though I'd just say it was getting pointless (I was never embarrassed to post there).

FWIW, I wasn't offended by that last round...only time I was ever actually upset was the first image-bomb. I don't want to seem too thin-skinned about trolling (anyway plenty of the teenpop posters, myself included, are trolls in their own way), but it was clear it was time to move on.

dabug, Thursday, 10 April 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

well if you guys want to talk about teenpop you can use ask chaki it's safe here.

chaki, Thursday, 10 April 2008 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

The biggest problem is that this further narrows ILM. It's just another genre that will vanish, and we'll get another billion threads about how great The Fall is. Individual threads for the genre seem unlikely-- someone (a non-Teenpop regular) started a JoJo thread a couple days ago and Noodle Vague immediately trolled it.

The thing that really annoys me about the trolling is that it seemed to come from a sincere (ignorant) belief that the thread was creepy. Other than Hannah Montana, I can't even think of any under-20 artists that received much attention. The most discussed artist last year was the over 20 (and rather plain) Kelly Clarkson.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 10 April 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

shit is delusional on that jojo thread. that is a completely unremarkable record -- from years ago. im not surprised NV trolled it.

banriquit, Thursday, 10 April 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

i highly doubt disney pop for little kids is going to vanish because of the thread locking, matt.

chaki, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

He means on ILM, dum-dum.

jaymc, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

i highly doubt disney pop for little kids is going to vanish from ilm because of the thread locking, matt.
