I've never tithed, but when I get comfortable financially, I'm going to give up 10% to charities of my choice, since I'm not a regular churchgoer. I went to a Unitarian service once where the preacher said that was cool too.

who asks for actual tithes? everybody & just nobody does it? i thought churches made money from straight weekly donations

I know that my folks cut an annual check in addition to their weekly collection plate contribution, but when I checked their webpage there's no information on it about fundraising at all.
I think that usually, once you become an actual Member of a church, they do ask you for money and 10% is the traditionally preferred amount. I'm just unsure what their fundraising structure is. I'll try and ask somebody.
