'The Time' started out as Prince recording music he considered strictly for black audiences since he thought the music he recorded under his own name was mostly black/white crossover music. The first couple "Time" albums are basically Prince playing everything and Morris singing over Prince's vocal lines. Sometimes you can still hear Prince in the backround!! Sometimes Morris played drums and i think Dez and Dr Fink probably played guitar and keys once in a while (but uncredited ofcourse) after Prince put an actual touring band together as "The Time" they wanted to write their own songs etc etc. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went on to produce huge songs lile everything Janet Jackson has ever done. Im not sure when Prince stopped writing and recording everything for them. For specifics check Allmusic.com. However, the look, sound and idea behind "The Time" was all the small one's.
