Lamp you seem to know literature pretty well! What's yr take on the naturalists from the early 20th/late 19th c.?

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 18 August 2011 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

thats one of my many blindspots although ive read some zola and dreiser. i suppose i like the idea of naturalism particularly in how important a sense of place seems to be to those dudes and also the idea of using fiction to sort of lay bare the 'social forces' that they perceived to be at work in their world. but in practice i often find my attention wandering a bit when im reading them. i recall w/ some chagrin a conversation where i claimed that 'the wire' was much more zola than dickens & i can kinda see what i like about my idea of the naturalists working 'better' for me in serial television

lamp,

How did you find this forum? What got you posting here? What keeps you posting here? What is the future of physical books?

uh oh

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 18 August 2011 05:23 (thirteen years ago) link

naturalism owns, at least in the lit world (dubious at best as some sociological theory). check out frank norris if you are so inclined

YES!

vandover and the brute is so crazy, you won't be disappointed

buzza, Thursday, 18 August 2011 05:31 (thirteen years ago) link

oh man markers thats totally not my field the most contemporary poet whose work id consider myself 'up on' is like marianne moore

stevie - the first two cassettes we did sold out and there are no real plans to rerelease them. tbh im not like superproud of them so they arent on the internet or anything atm i guess that might change. im working on something new now but id really like it to be a lot better before it gets released

tbh the only music stuff ive done since the winter is some djing and couple of mixes...

uh oh im having a fantasy. i found ilm via google searching for 'vampire weekend criticism' and registered to argue some point but i came back to look at it cuz ilm founder t0m ew1ng and i used to work for the same giant advertising/pr/market research conglomerate and he wrote a long article about this place that we got emailed at work then i found out that dom was running an email ballot poll about videogames that seemed like fun. i still post because i moved around a lot of over the last couple of years and dont have that many friends here and my bf works nights and i guess it makes me feel less lonely

i mean lycanthropy + naturalism, how can you go wrong?

buzza, Thursday, 18 August 2011 05:35 (thirteen years ago) link

dear lamp,

how do you find the time for all of your hobbies?

iatee, Thursday, 18 August 2011 05:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel like physical future of books is mostly as 'design objects' and that the idea of using screens to interact w/ text will become too ingrained for books to live much of a life as 'things to actually read'. also kinda feel like 'owning books' will be more and more a class marker

dear lamp,

a friend of mine is developing curriculum for a new class he gets to teach to aspiring game designers about game history. Do you know of any good books/writing on the subject?

sarahel, Sunday, 28 August 2011 01:00 (thirteen years ago) link

hi lamp, what cities have you lived in?

like major cities? sf, toronto (twice) and nyc.

Do you know of any good books/writing on the subject?

steve poole's 'trigger happy' is p good and is available for free online but its more about 'game design' than gaming's history. i cant think of a really good book that tries to tackle the history of the industry but i liked 'masters of doom' (which read on an ilg recommendation im p sure) quite a lot.

really i think the best bet is magazine articles - theres been lots of good long pieces over the years from the recent nyer piece on miyamoto to the wired (?) piece on microsoft.

something trim but tousled? like late 90s model hair where its artfully messy w/o being at all threatening or 'weird'

$ (Lamp), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 21:42 (eight years ago) link

that's kind of what i'm thinking! My plan was an undercut w/ no fade, like a very abrupt line, with 1-2" hair on top kind of like a Caesar but slicked forward and kinda messy
