Believe it or not!

Of the 16 occasions on which WI have been dismissed for 100 or less, 6 have been in the last 5 years.

The Poms on c4 will be unbearable tonight. :-(

Might just have a long bath instead.

tailender (tailender), Monday, 15 March 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Implying that they're not usually unbearable - a debatable point. :-)

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 15 March 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of them are often tolerable. Some can be dealt with occasionally.

Tonight they will be worse than the standard Indian/Pakistani debate on full throttle...

At least you won't have to put up with Poms anywhere near a bath heh heh.

Apparently a number of the Windies players reacted by "partying" unitl the early hours. Then only half the team turned out for the optional net session on what would have been the 5th day of the Test.

Lara is still a strange guy to have as captain. He does not need remedial net sessions and apparently does not go to them all that often. The rest of his team, who do need remedial work follow the captain's example.

Whatever is said about Waugh, you can be sure that he always put in as hard as anyone at training and expected the rest to do the same.

This is the conundrum of the current West Indies team.

With Lara as captain, they will go nowhere, for just the reason you state. Lara's ego doesn't seem to allow him to play under any other captain, but you can't drop him from the team, because he is far and away their best player and he can win matches on his own.

West Indies cricket always seems to have been a bit shambolic. It just makes you realise how great a leader Clive Lloyd must have been to have kept that team together for so long. You could say the same of Imran as Pakistan captain.

I agree with all that.
As a batsman, I think Lara, when his head is screwed on, is the best going around.

As a leader he is hopeless. There seems to be a complete lack of the Waugh like drive to help those around him get the best out of their ability.

Some of those guys in the team do seem to have a fair bit of ability. Sarwan always looks good, but has not really delivered.

Intersting article in the Weekend Aus about Gary Sobers. He puts a great deal of the blame on politics - both the usual sort and within the sport itself. Also upon the failure of senior players to pass on knowledge and skills to the younger generations.

He himself keeps on trying. An admirable person.

Hooper was captaining well, but he and Lara apparently don't get on at all ...

If there's a team in world cricket who need a Brearley-style leader (and Hooper would do), it's the Windies ... until the next crop of youngsters come up with a healthy attitude

Lara talks the talk. He walks around with the swagger and misses training sessions because he doesn't need them. The thing is that Lara can walk the walk. The rest of them talk the talk and then crawl off the pitch. Lara can't then turn around and get them to stop talking the talk. This problem would probably occur if Lara was in the team as a player only. They can't drop Lara because he is there only good player. What to do?

The only bloke who really puts up a fight when the going gets tough is the bloody wicketkeeper. Sarwan, Chanderpaul and the others have no balls.
