I don't really want to talk about it, but...2nd Test v SL Thread

..this test that's going on... is it a bit crap or what?

It seems like it's really on a knife edge at the moment. If we get a pair set we could bat for a couple of sessions and put the game back on.

How serious is Ponting's injury.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ponts will bat at 6 if required.

Great effort Gilly making a ton at no 3 but Trev, don't even DREAM about batting him there permanently, unless there's room for another keeper in the team as well.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Australia Richie minus one at stumps.

Gilly 140*, Martyn 64*, Hades out for 5, Narrowly Limited out for 9, extras 3.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems that for once we have reason to be grateful for an injury. Wonder whether Johnnie would have done so well batting in his usual position.

If you don't want to talk about the test you've certainly come to the right place LOL.

4-295, new ball taken, Martyn into the 90s.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty impressed with the way Martyn has applied himself in these tests. Despite obviously not being at the top of his game, he has stuck it out and made two crucial if not cosmetic knocks.

Now if Ponting can finally finish what he has threatened to do in every innings so far, and these two can add another 100, it will leave the fragile SL batting line-up with a mammoth task.

And we still have Symonds to come. Wouldn't it be nice if Andy came in and did the job that GG is renowned for doing?- a century under a run-a-ball or similar.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ponting just gone. Poor decision apparently.

I would have prefered to see Symonds bat with his patron, but it is not to be. Martyn doing a great job.

The extra 60 runs Oz gave a way this morning could still prove to be fatal in this game. The decision to bowl Kaspo for nine overs in the morning when Dizzy was fiddling his thumbs was poor. Surely 5 would have been enough.

powwow (powwow), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it did seem strange. I think the reasoning was that they were chancing theuir arms so much when batting it was only a matter of time before they got out.
I dunno if Dizzy bowling would have changed things that much.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Thursday, 18 March 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It is raining and dark, BTW.
Play is suspended for now.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Thursday, 18 March 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The latest satellite image (infra-red) doesn't look too bad. I think the rain will pass fairly quickly.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Sri Lanka is the little island just above the centre of that image, BTW.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oj, I notice you've made Jeff's acquaintance.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, what a charmer he is. I suppose I shouldn't let him wind me up, but he seems to be a master of the art. Best policy would seem to be ignoring the prat.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I got tangled up with him on about day 3 after registration.

VoR was being generally VoR-ish, Jeff called VoR a trainspotter, VoR called Jeff a trainspotter back, Jeff spent the next half an hour stalking VoR. Then I wonder aloud what Jeff's so crapped off about and make the observation that VoR hasn't even started being a pain in the arse yet, so he turns on me. (Of course VoR is nowhere to be seen by this stage. I now know better than to expect any different.)

Big fish in small pond. Bluff, bluster and bulldust. I should have left him and HWATSSOO III to slug it out between them, it would have been a fair fight. Cyber-handbag-swinging at 10 paces.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers Nerkie. Thought it was just me who'd been reeled in, but he's obviously a serial offender. A bit sad really. I've no time for cyber warriors.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he wasn't the reel-er, he was the reel-ee. In both your case and mine.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 18 March 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough. In any case, that thread, along with many other harmless ones, has been sent to oblivion. The Sunshine/Lollypops remains for some reason.

Weather woofing.

Point taken. You won't hear any more from me on the weather. :-)

ojitarian (ojitarian), Friday, 19 March 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Play is underway on Day 4 though.
Batting sounds like it will be tight for the first hour.

Recent Overs: . 1 . 3 . . | . . . . . . | 1 . . . . . | . . . . . . |

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 19 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like things have picked up a bit recently. Marto had another lucky escape when Jayawardene dived in front of Tillakaratne and spilled what would have been an easy chance for the latter. 5/349 at the moment. Another 100 or so needed, I feel.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Friday, 19 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Martyn obviously doesn't know a red ink opportunity when it's handed to him ... batting with MacGill and he goes down swinging.

Probably enough runs in the bank.

Martyn averaging over 80 for the series so far.

pieman (pieman), Friday, 19 March 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they got another 93. Good enough, hopefully. Great knock by Marto.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Friday, 19 March 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

MacGill averaging more than Ponting, Langer & Symonds...

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all over. Aniother win to Australia but an excellent performance by Sri Lanka as well.

Shane Warne has now taken 5 wickets in all 4 innings this series. An incredible effort especially considering he had never previously taken 5 wickets in an innings in any grade of cricket (according to an expert).

Fred Yeomans, Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh. First time Warney's taken 3 Michelles in a row, let alone 4. Off the top of my head I think the record is 5 or 6 (perhaps by S.F. Barnes?), but I would have to check.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 20 March 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Record is 6 by C.T.B. Turner. Bedser and Richardson 5 each. Warney is tied with 12 others on 4, including Murali and Rodney Hogg(!).

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 20 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on Warnie. One more game, do the same thing there and you'll set two records in one go.
