Looking out my window towards the Adelaide oval. It's quite cool today and overcast. THe chance of rain is minimal. Maybe some passing showers at some point, but should clear up and allow a full days play.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Williams in for Bracken. There's a surprise.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course Steve wouldn't want his golden-haired boy bowling on an Addled Oval highway.

Bloody Dubber bias! (Just thought I'd save somebody the trouble!)

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Waugh elected to bat. Good toss to win. A score of at least 400 is needed here.

Zahreer Kahn out. That makes it hard for India. Harbajin having finger surgery.

Prediction. Aust. 1/136 at lunch.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Australia 0/119 at lunch. And a result Frederick.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

India bowl for 15 minutes, no dismissals, the ball leaves the square three times max, two left handers batting.....2 OVERS.
This is ridiculous.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have pictures Fred? What are they doing?

All this talk about entertaining cricket - there needs to be cricket for it to be entertaining.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hayden chases one and edges to the keeper.

A victim of the 'too easy syndrome' I fear.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Australia 0/119 at lunch"

and now for my next prediction...Collingwood to win the grand final next year LOL.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This cricinfo bloke is outdoing himself with this level of information. Maybe the Indian are going through the overs too quickly for him to keep up.

5.2 Pathan to Hayden, OUT:

Australia 18/1, Partnership of 18
ML Hayden c Patel b Pathan 12 (15b 2x4 0x6)
JL Langer 5* (17b 1x4) IK Pathan 2.2-0-12-1

5.1 Pathan to Hayden, no run

End of over 5 (maiden) Australia 18/0
AB Agarkar 3-1-5-0 - City End

4.6 Agarkar to Langer, no run
4.5 Agarkar to Langer, no run
4.4 Agarkar to Langer, no run
4.3 Agarkar to Langer, no run
4.2 Agarkar to Langer, no run
4.1 Agarkar to Langer, no run

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it that is Pathan's first test wicket. A pretty good one ot get.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ponting seems to be trying to make sure my predicterd lunch score of 1/136 somes true regardless of how many overs the Indians bowl.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Violet Krumble into the attack...and nearly gets a wicket second ball.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mate I won't be happy if powwow jags the lunch score I can tell you. Punter slow down! No, not you Sourav!!

:)

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed the first hour.
Panthan looked like he was enjoying himself- saw Ponting dropped at 3rd-4th slip.
Anyone got a report on his bowling? 'cause they're really gonna miss Khan.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that he is making his debut. A young bloke. The guy writing the description at the Indian player list predicted that he would be a star in two or three years. I'm not sure when that was written.

Was the dropped catch an easy one?

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It was quite hard, high to gully, who seemed to be reaching back for it which makes you wonder if he was a bit late seeing it.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough chance, but it should've been taken I think.
Flashed hard by Ponting fairly wide and possibly a tiny bit too high.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing we can be absolutely sure of is, it needed to be taken. It's the only time Ponting was within a bulls roar of getting out so far, and he's already past 50.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Wicket.
Crap-tuned into the live audio 'cause cricinfo is stuffed.
Langer hits Kumble in the air just before lunch.
2/135

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Good one Langer. If only he had pushed a single instead, my prediction would have been right on the money.

powwow, Friday, 12 December 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Back luck powwow heh heh.

:)

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 12 December 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ton to Ponts. Since Tugga has come in he's eased back. Has he slipped into Captain's Innings mode?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 12 December 2003 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hardly. The Captain's gone sick right from the word go...now pay close attention Punter!

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 12 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What was he supposed to pay attention to, REB?

Waugh - a scratchy 30.

Punter 160*.

tailender (tailender), Friday, 12 December 2003 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dogscratch finally in his stride. Set for a big one tomorrow if Australia continue to want the runs.
Hopefully the overnight rest will do Punter some good as well.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Friday, 12 December 2003 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhh Poseiden, so you're the one who jinxed him. Naughty boy.

tailender (tailender), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

A nice innings in the end by Katich (after a very scratchy first 11 runs, 2 boundaries in one over got him going). I loved that flat bat 6 he hit over midwicket in Nehra's comeback over with the new ball. Just for a second I thought Allan Border was back ...

pieman (pieman), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Took him forever to get set, almost a reverse of Waugh who looked like getting stuck in from the very first but went totally off the boil. But a good innings all up.

But doesn't anyone have anything good to say about Punter? It hasn't been a totally useless performance, after all.

tailender (tailender), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

" I loved that flat bat 6 he hit over midwicket in Nehra's comeback over with the new ball. Just for a second I thought Allan Border was back ... "

Will you modding Queenslanders stop taunting the rest of us Eastern Staters with your troglodytic refusal to adopt daylight saving and thereby miss the last hour's play like a real Australian? :-(

tailender (tailender), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Once again good old Stewie is there to pick up the slops.

As NWB never dismisses a batsman that bats before the keeper, Ganguly could end MacDill's career tomorrow by batting Patel at 11.

(NWB: Not Warne's Bootlace)

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL @ Fred... McGill is proof that sh*t gets wickets.

Is it time to introduce a young spinner to the Aus lineup - such as a Cameron White or Nathan Horwitz?

Bennö (Bennö), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Dravid's batting this morning somewhat perplexing. India are only 30 odd runs behind. Why not up the ante -or at least take the singles- and try to get Inida to or beyond the Australian total as quickly as possible. There are still nearly two full days left and a possible result for either side if they bowl well.

powwow, Monday, 15 December 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

FInally Gillespie gets a wicket. 33 run lead to Australia. THose runs could come in very handy on the last day. Who would have thought a few days ago that 560 was close to a hundred short of what they would need to get a reasonable first innings lead?

powwow, Monday, 15 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Three wickets already for the Indians.
Australia are gonna have to work hard just to save this match now.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There is still plenty of batting left for Aus - I can't see any result other than a draw really...

Bennö (Bennö), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there will be a result. The pitch, it would appear is deteriorating - as good test wickets should. I think that anything over 280 on the last day would be very hard for the Indians to get.

powwow, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

At this stage it's hard to see us setting a target of 280; it will require good batting from Martyn and Waugh

If only we had a decent off-spinner to make use of the variable bounce

pieman (pieman), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There is still Katich and Gillchrest to come and a few reasonable tailenders in Bichel and GIllespie. Martyn and Waugh seem relatively untroubled at the mo. Going on the cricinfo guy's descriptions.

powwow, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There is still Katich and Gillchrest to come and a few reasonable tailenders in Bichel and GIllespie. Martyn and Waugh seem relatively untroubled at the mo. Going on the cricinfo guy's descriptions. I suspect the plan is to play safe until an hour out from stumps and then start going after the bowling with a veiw to a possible declaration 30mins to an hour before lunch tomorrow.

powwow, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

On the rack at the moment.
Time for Dogscratch to really step up when the pressure is on and give Australia something to defend.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 15 December 2003 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dogscratch throws his wicket away with a skied hook shot again. FFS.

Dizzy needs to do something special to win us this one.

Ross (Ross), Monday, 15 December 2003 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if Agarkar can take 6 wickets, the Aussies are still a chance. I think the bowling is just way too weak (apart from Dizzy) to do so, however.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"...can't bowl Australia out twice"
Skittled for under 200 on a good batting strip. India putting on 150 with the tail on the same wicket.

Not just a hiccup either. Good bowling/catching and some indisciplined batting.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Conversely to India's 150, the last 5 wickets for Australia fell for 13 runs.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think were farked. :-(

Big Dog (Big Dog), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone rate us as a chance to win this tomorrow?
Bowling has looked most unimpressive so far- the greatest problem seems to be the inability to put sustained pressure on the Indians. We have runs of wickets that appear to be luck or Indians nerves rather than keeping them under the cosh.

You doubt the return of Blee will change this very much as well.
We miss the screws of McGrath/Warne as much as their ability to take wickets.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 15 December 2003 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

We've had the gong. 200 on that pitch against an attack of which MacGill is a leading member? The word 'doddle' comes to mind.

It'll be interesting to see how we go in Melb and Syd needing to win both to win the series.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all VoR's fault:

"It has been xxx days since India last won a Test outside the sub-Continent."

:-(

tailender (tailender), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of VoR:

Has he been sighted on any forum (or anywhere in real life) since the Yanks picked up the Saddmeister?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 15 December 2003 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, the Aussies are boned all right. Terrible bowling and fielding (again), and loose batting in the second dig. It will take a miracle for Australia to win tomorrow.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 15 December 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The writing is well and truly on the wall. Magill is shite. He even said so before the series...Magill reckons he had to be a success in this series to be considered worth his place rather than just a fill in for Warnie.

The jury has returned it's verdict. GUILTY. Back to the Blues with ye Magill.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not over yet.
MacGill has today to bowl. Its not all on his shoulders though- without support from the quicks he cannot bowl us to victory.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Australia are still a chance to win the game.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Having siad that, they did not look like getting a wicket in 10 overs last night.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I fancy SRW to take a couple of wickets here (due to variable bounce and straight bowling) ...

we need 2 quick wickets and we're right back in it.

We were 50 runs shy of a good target IMHO

pieman (pieman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally agree with you there pieman on all three accounts.

The Australian tail did not bat well yesterday. THey went for the slog with a spread field offering many singles.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Blame the tail for poor batting?

Harsh - they are employed to take wickets. But I spose they are struggling to do that. Can someone tell Magilla that he is meant to hold the other end of the bat - he might have more luck...

Bennö (Bennö), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Warne will make such a difference when he returns.

A better bowler.

A sound slip fieldsman (and don't we need one)

And he can bat ... MacGill seems to have no idea

pieman (pieman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

MacGill faced about five balls. On one of the first ones he stepped back to Aquaker. Fair cop, not even I would do that to a guy bolwing at 130ish kms/ph. The ball he got out to was trying to hit over the fence on the leg side with three fielders on the fence. That is more that poor batting, that is plain stupid. Bickel, Dizzy and WIlliams were only marginally better. And Katich going for the hook with a fine leg and square leg on the boundary is just as bad. If he pulls the shot off - i.e it goes to ground he gets one run. It was barely the time to try and hit it over the fielder's head for six. It is poor reward to risk management.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

<"It has been xxx days since India last won a Test outside the sub-Continent."

:-(

-- tailender (cjf...), December 15th, 2003.>>

my sentiments entirely, though I think he was refering to years since a series win...

4 reasons for losing....VoR, Magoo, the Indians are playing wonderful inspired cricket, India plays like a well captained team

horace, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not that MacGill has no idea. He has contributed as a batsman before. It's more that he couldn't give a toss.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ONe must give credit where it is due. The transformation of this team under Gangles captaincy is remarkable.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

india played like a team..we have played as individuals

horace, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Tendles pads up again, is given out LB again, doubtless the conspiracy mob at C4 will scream blue murder again, but you've got to ask yourself: when will he ever learn?

On this matter, his thinking is very well described my the middle syllable of his last name.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Too true Horrie. That was even the case in the first innings.

powwow, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

S.R.T. - Stupid Ruddy Twit?

How the hell could he pad up again after what happened in Brisbane?

Proof that instinct will always win over intellect.

tailender (tailender), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Indian batsmen seem to have "rostered" their best innings very well ... Ganguly and Laxman in Brisbane, Dravid and Laxman in Adelaide, inevitably Tendulkar will perform when the others don't.

Conversely nobody put their hand up for Australia in the second innings, which is where the game was lost ... another 100 runs would have saved the game and probably won it.

Hayden contributed very little in the match; he was the worst of the 4 openers.
