We regret to inform you that Evelyn Wallace Hughes, known as "Blocky" to his friends, has passed at age 83 of a rare degenerative condition known as Spellman's Disease. Mr. Hughes is survived by his second wife, Dolores, his children Graham, Eustace and Sylvia, and his adopted grandson Geoffrey. In his lifetime, Mr. Hughes was best known as the scion of a wealthy New York family that had several land holdings in Long Island and the Bronx, the founder of the controversial gentlemen's club The Penguin Society, and the author of several profanity-filled letters to the editors of the New York Times in the wake of his divorce from his first wife, Lily Cabot. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Hughes Fund at the Worldwide Afghan Hound Rescue Society, located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

thnx for helping max!!! insider's note: altho traditionally inclusion in the register is given to anyone who is sponsored by five current members the ny register will no longer consider anyone who was sponsored by anna paquin, citing her "blantant disregard for both the cherished values the register seeks to uphold" and her accent in the recent hbo production "true blood"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Register would like to deny in the strongest terms possible the allegations being brought against it by various third parties. Since its inception in the nineteenth, the Register has included people of all heights and weights, and has at various points contained members with such physical deformities as: a sixth toe on the left foot, astigmatism, large warts on the webbing between the thumb and index finger, scoliosis, and accident-induced blindness. The Register would like to further point out that it has never, and has no immediate plans to, and I quote, "require full genome mapping as a prerequisite for membership." Such accusations are baseless and the Register is currently considering legal recourse as one of many options in its response.

PLEASE NOTE: Franklin Dressington-Maxwell has alerted the Register that while working on his memoirs he will not be accepting callers at Blarnegay Hill, his estate in Oyster Bay Cove. He expects to be done in time for the annual Oyster Bay Battered Women's Charity Soiree on Memorial Day Weekend. While writing, Mr. Dressington-Maxwell will also be growing a beard.

two weeks pass...

In response to yesterday's article in the Wall Street Journal, the Register feels it is important to highlight its many charitable contributions over the years, including its famous annual "Adoption Auction." With all due respect to the venerable Journal, the Register does not believe that journalists of uncertain heritage, resentful, no doubt, of the esteem afforded those who are placed in Register, are in a proper position to engage in criticism of an institution as august and well-regarded as the New York Social Register.
