ILC @))* YEAR IN REVIEW

2008 was a crazy year for all us here at I Love Cricket, caught up in what seemed like an endlessly exhilarating election season backdropped by the worst economic crisis to effect the city since 1929. It was a year for change and a year for hope, it was year of layoffs and downturns. Faced with events of such historic magnitude the absurdist labors of a small Web 3.0 media adventure outlet seemed not just insignificant but disconnected from the new reality coalescing just outside one's window. Still, I think that a number of our contributors - from the saxophone-playing walrus to Hollywood superagent Mort Steingoldenbergsky - gave our readers the sort of critical analysis and skeptical insight into triumphs and crises we built our name on.

So look to this thread for anecdotes, .gifs, blog posts, and whatever errata we can come up with about the moments and memories that shaped 2008 as we knew it. burt_stanton offers a video tour of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Editor-in-chief ice cr?m discusses blogging in Web 3.0. Contributor caek profiles Twilight star Hugh Jackman and lists the toughest public schools in northern England. I list and rank the pizzerias of TriBeCa. And much more in this, the ILC year-end-thread of 2008.

my thoughts on music in 2008: one cold november night myself and a small crew of friends went to see a trio of lesbian DJs spin classic italo and bloghouse at a small sweaty upstairs bar. sitting at one of the dancefloor adjacent tables i was struck by the fact that everyone else there was already facebook friends but us. i still had a great time dancing to "Flat Beat" and Sally Shapiro remixes. at one point a brunette in a tunic dress and ruby-red heels stuck her hand down my pants. someone breakdanced during "The Healer". the only thing missing was cheaper drinks.

okay that post deserved to kill this thread. moving on though here are some thoughts about the year in cuisine 2008: its become a bit of tradition for my group of friends to take the train out to stantonland most sundays to hang at my friend BG's place. we chill and play card games and watch football and BG will make as dinner the best of which was an australian pad thai that was seriously awesome i dont know wtf it had in it even though i was in the kitchen drinking red wine while she made it! also that time i brought a couple of pies - banana cream and sour cherry - for desert and we all stuffed ourselves and played yahtzee and i have to say - i won!!!

cant recommend this ritual highly enough for everyone's 2009 it is a "wise move" to say the v. least :D

best days of the year imo:

  • january: took train to gothenburg, visited the rohsska museum and then went out on the town w/ two australian kids, ending up moshing to rage against the machine at some weird bar at 3am (barfed on the train the next day u_u)
  • march(?): dj harvey sarcastic disco party, rolled up 12 or 13 deep with a bunch of random weirdos, spent the whole night buzzed and saw my philosophy professor, ended up at some diner in los feliz snakkin on milkshakes and fries while the sun came up
  • may: oldest friend in the world came out for graduation, went out to osteria mozza w/ fam for dinner, then went bowling w/ my roomies and my brother
  • june: beautiful drive thru nm and w. texas ending up in denton and eating mediocre pizza and pretty good ice cream
  • sept: decided at 6:00 on friday to go out to dinner, made last-minute reservations at blue hill and had 1 of the best meals of the year and got drunk on terrific wine w/ the chick
  • nov: election day, no lines at the polling place, cant get any work done, end up at a restaurant in bed-stuy around the corner from gf's place packed to the gills, move back to the apt and listen to the victory speech on the radio while little kids are screaming and chanting outside
  • dec: this past sunday made terrible sugar cookies w/ old high school buds + pretty good hot buttered rum, then out to local pizza place drinking two beautiful pies and pitchers of beer for amazing nj prices, back to my house were we played hearts next to the fire

i am about a million skeptical of 'evolutionary psychology'

eman cipation s1ocklamation (max), Sunday, 28 December 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago)

opening lines of the book:

this book is an attempt to use evolutionary psychology to account for the surprising fact that humans can become
so emotionally absorbed in stories we know as fictions. it is addressed especially to readers who are wary of such explanations. i am wary of them myself.

i think its an excellent look at why we read from a biological pov that remains skeptical of our ability to truly answer that qn. flesch is def v. aware of the limitations of a strictly darwinian interpretation and the complexity of altruism but he makes a strong case for the evolutionary basis of literature. and the prose is excellent, assured w/o being pedantic and incredibly lucid and clear even when dealing with foggy topics.
