Mad Brad manning the cart. India won the toss and batting. Lawson rabbiting on about grass on the pitch.

Brett Lee, the time is now.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 1 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Two passengers in the team again - Lee and MacGill.

(woof)

pieman (pieman), Friday, 2 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Still too many balls being bowled by both of them that don't need playing...

Lee just got Chopper to wave at one, then had him caught off a no ball, then had him dropped by Katich.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Katich catch was a sitter, would have hit him fair in the solar plexus.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

For someone who is supposed to be one of the better fielders in the team (according to all the commentators, anyway), Simon Katich sure hasn't impressed me much. Dropped two sitters and his ground fielding hasn't been too flash either. May well have "dropped the test" here, I think.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Friday, 2 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

greetings to all

...may this be the last test when the Oz team is afflicted with such a panoply of overrated dudders....bung, doggy, hacken and yhe koala on form could have been 12th man...magoo of course should have been 13th

horace, Friday, 2 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

God I'll miss the whinging when Waugh goes.

I suspect most of the whingers will as well until they find an alternative scapegoat.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

not to worry freddy....the dubber production line is in high gear...clarke, nash, thornley are all top players...bevan and haddin are in the wings and I hear that slee is back in training...no truth to the rumour doing the rounds re greg mathews tho

horace, Friday, 2 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed the wicket. Wotappened?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sehwag caught gilly bowled dizzy

horace, Friday, 2 January 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't miss the second one.

Chopper yorked by the Chainsaw Kid. That would have to be a first for an opening batsman.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

KOK (without asthmatic frog impression afterwards, therefore meant to be serious):

'The ball is now going both ways, which is how fast bowlers like it'.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

rofl...i think you are a bit tough on karaoke as harsha calls him

horace, Friday, 2 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

DRAVID LBW DIZZY 38 OUTSIDE OFF PLAYING CLAYTONS SHOT

3-194, honors back to even.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Tendles has his 50 (looking v. dangerous), and Katich has just come on replacing MacDill who had been bowling OK to Laxman again (got him twice in Melbourne).

Kat second ball long-hop just gone for 4.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 January 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The ABC Forum, indeed the World, is gripped by (just for a change) a classic 'Muruli chucks/no he doesn't/oh yes he does/doesn't/does/doesn't/curry munching twerp/racist scumbag/go bonk an elephant/go join One Nation' mass-debate.

Meanwhile, Nath is currently refereeing an equally interesting slanging match between the pro and anti Steve factions, in which Boofer (under his current tag, with his current moronic signature) is providing his usual weighty intellectual input.

If anybody wants to talk about the current Test match being played in Australia (involving 22 cricketers, none called Muttiah Muralitharan, and 21 of whom are not called Steve Waugh) here is the place.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hi Fred.

The ABC forum deserves it. I'm going to start a Murali chucks thread any chance I get and perpetuate anything that's already started.

This match looks like a draw. I hope Australia bats sensibly and makes 600+ as well ...

pieman (pieman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

btw sorry we missed you in Melbourne ...

pieman (pieman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

MacDill has just dropped another one, this one a lot easier.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

... I hate him

Gillespie, thank God, has just bowled VVS

under-rated my arse

pieman (pieman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

over-rated that is :o)

pieman (pieman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Was MacGill being booed by the crowd? Heh heh.

I've despised MacGill and Lee for a while now. I hope if this test series has shown anything, it is that these two jokers should never play for Australia again. Way too arrogant, and without the ability to back it up.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Congrats Sachin 'Double' Ton-dulkar!

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Great batting by Tendulkar and Laxman... average bowling by everyone except Dizzy. Australia have a big job to save this game (although no doubt Captain Viagra will still try to win it).

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

MacDill is NOT bowling like a bloke who needs telling he's playing in his last Test regardless.

He has packed it in. If we field again in this match Steve, FFS leave the useless lug in the dressing room. Mentally he's already retired.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Pathetic effort from MacGill again - doesn't deserve to wear the baggy green.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

MacDill has bowled bunk but he's still been nearly a run an over better than Chainsaw Charlie.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Tendles has just beaten Ravi Shastri's record for an Indian at the SCG.

Shastri was Warne's first Test wicket, Tendles was at the other end at the time. Will he be at the other end for Australia's last Test wicket before Warne comes back? (Has that already happened?)

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve has sent the whole side over to clap Tendles off the field at stumps.

Good gesture, also gives the message that despite his great innings he hasn't quite managed to shag Australia out leather-chasing.

Both Tend and VVS batted brilliantly, Patel also played a nice innings towards the end.

Bowling: Full marks Dizzy, Bracks barely passes, Katich should be kept in after class, the other two should be expelled.

Australia's best hope is a Jan 86 type draw.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, this Australian team is even worse at playing spin than their 1986 counterparts. At least that team had AB. Don't be surprised to see an innings victory for the Indians here.

Nice gesture by the Aussies at stumps.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

One good thing about Ganguly's wicket ... no chainsaw

An appropriate response from Lee ... about time? - no, way too late

pieman (pieman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Gillespie, again, playing like a tail-ender who wants to be there. Only 50 runs to get now.
Pity his bowling has been a little tardy in this test.

It's been better than the other pretenders, of course.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 5 January 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope he gets a hundred ...

and Katich keeps it up for 200+ ...

pieman (pieman), Monday, 5 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a good woof :o(

pieman (pieman), Monday, 5 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

So it's YOU guys who put the mozz on Katich?!

Cleavy, Monday, 5 January 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Gee, thanks guys... we were looking like half a chance to save the
follow-on until you intervened! Any news on whether Gangles has enforced it? A quick 200 or so by the Indians to set the Aussies a
target might be the best way to go. There are 50 overs left today
plus 90 tomorrow. I reckon around 100 overs will be enough to
bowl the Aussies out.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 5 January 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

India batting.
Ganguly won't declare with a lead of less than 400, so a draw the only result now.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 5 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

FFS! Another no-ball wicket to Lee!

Cleavy, Monday, 5 January 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

... and another dropped catch, this time by Punter. No idea if it
was easy or difficult.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 5 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ponting drops him in the same over as the no-ball catch.
Deja-vu.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 5 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like India will declare soon. This means that they will have
scored around 900 runs in the match, whilst losing only 9 wickets. A
sad indictment of our bowling attack in this match.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Monday, 5 January 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

teehee@koala who got the attack he asked for

horace, Monday, 5 January 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

India declares leaving Australia 443 to get from 94 overs (90 tomorrow).

The slightest chance for OMG to have a fairytale finish perhaps?

Poseiden (Poseiden), Monday, 5 January 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be very bloody impressed if your lot do it.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Austraila need to score at 4.93 an over to win.

This will be just like a 90-over, one day game.
Good luck guys.

GO INDIA. (Sorry, the thought of Australia losing a test series at home is really appealing.)

Kiwi in Oz, Monday, 5 January 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Australia trying to consolidate now after Langer and Hayden started strongly.
2/150 after 39 overs.
300 to get off 56 overs.
If Australia don't lose another wicket in this session and don't worry about the RR they could still have the chance to go for the win in an extended last session.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Now 281 runs to win, or 49 overs to survive ...

Martyn scracthing desperately, Ponting also seems to be struggling. These two need to stay in for a long time yet, at least another 30 overs.

pieman (pieman), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Marto out.
This is it. One last chance for Steve to show what he will be remembered for. I thought he looked really determined in the 1st Innings as well.
The fairytale/horror story has one last chapter.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And Martyn is out, caught by yc's cousin (on as a sub) off Kumble for 40.

The new bloke in looks OK so far. Some kid called Steve something. Looks like he has a good future in Test cricket. So far, 6 not out.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

250 to go ...

:o)

pieman (pieman), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ponting out. Caught and bowled for 47 by Pathan.

Steve, you're still the captain.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Katich looks great against the spinners, BTW. Really using his feet well. Will be an asset in the subcontinent in form like this.

Martyn, however, is a big question mark.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Waugh is the third batsman in the innings to reach 47

STOP PRESS: ...and the first to get to 48.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Waugh 50....for the 50th time (not incl centuries) but only for the second time in a 4th innings.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ajit the Ijit on, bowls a wide 2nd ball, Billy Bowden signals like he's doing the 'Walk Like An Egyptian'.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Time to put it on the line folks- any chance?
I think Katich might have a dash if Steve lets him.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No. No now, not at 0-78, not never.

Steve could shut up his critics here and elsewhere for all time by accepting the early finish with 7 overs to go and sod the last ton.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

All over. Good effort by Australia today, great effort Kat, all the batsmen except Gilly contributed by batting for a long time, Dizzy had an excellent match as well, even Tugga's 120 runs for the match were very handy.

Enough's been said already about our bowlers.

India played very well but you don't win many series with a full set of batsmen, one bowler and half a keeper (and that's not a cheap shot at his height). A series draw was a fair result but both sides have obvious areas in which they can improve, and you wonder how far behind whoever the third best side in the world is.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How long is it now since India won a series outside the subcontinent?

pieman (pieman), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ponting drop was not quite as simple as Magoo's, but still straightforward. That's at least 15 drops this series, many of them simple. There is something seriously wrong with this team.

PS: I was there when Tugga played his last innings.

tailender (tailender), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Was MacGill being booed by the crowd? Heh heh.
-- ojitarian, January 3rd, 2004 5:14 PM"

Every time he went near the ball for the rest of the day. :-)

An absorbing match, with a truly thrilling last day. Towards the end the crowd had written off the possibility of a win, and were just willing Steve on to a final century (yes, myself included). Pity it didn't happen, but it was as good a way to finish a career as possible - except for not winning the match/series.

tailender (tailender), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you feel that Steve's sudden decision to go for the ton may have cost Katich (who was scoring just as freely, without throwing the textbook out) any chance of a second century himself?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly, but Katich will get more chances, that was Steve's last.

I think he did it to say thanks to the crowd, more than anything else, actually. He clearly was not thinking entirely normally yeasterday.
It was wonderful while it lasted. Pity he didn't come in when Langer got out out, instead of Marto - we may have had a real chance at winning then.

tailender (tailender), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)
