lol confidence intervals really? is what im thinking rite now

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

hey gbx - def u dont have to answer that if u dont want to - but what has your dad sd about med skool? would u work in the same field that does?

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

*that he does

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

well, my dad is from another era, u know (turned 65 the other day), and is a plastic surgeon. this is relevant only because: i'm thinking primary care/EM, probably (maybe general surgery), and i know what DNA is.

my dad LOVED medical school, and is a nerd in general about his job. i don't think i'd go into plastics (for a load of reasons), but i'm considering surgery, just cause i've seen a lot of it and it's cool. as. hell.

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

ha my mom loved loved loved med school too - she started in pediatrics but then kept going after she started doing a lot of neuro/pysch work in her practice - she was in school off and on until i was about 12

i was talking to her today basically saying that im good w/just doing research and the program im in - i have no real desire to practice - and she was "..." about it.

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

what kinda research u doin again? micro/immuno stuff or something? i <3 immuno, but am afraid to ask the OG big-baller immuno guy here if he'll let me do stuff for him. i have zero lab experience (lol english major)

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

yah immuno postgrad - i had to go back to school for about a year and half part time in btw undergrad and now to get all the biochem/lab xp lol econ/math major - its really neat so far but im only a couple of weeks in so nothing new but its ~exciting~ reading about researchers discovering potential new anit-tb compounds thinking ~that could be me~

i basically decided that i wasnt going to try for med school proper again i play raquetball w/ sum med students and talking to them i get the feeling while u get to do some awesome stuff id basically want to be back where i am in a couple of years anyway.

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/09/28/090928fa_fact_specter

^^ in the much less emo spirit in which this thread was started tho this is a pretty neat article

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah see that is the thing, if yr ~mainly interested in research, then just stick with that. i'm really into doing clinical stuff (yay ppl!), and don't know shit about shit when it comes to HARD LAB BIZNEZZ that the idea of me doing research is pretty lulz

also many med students are intolerable

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

have you heard of Dr M4rc J3nkins? cool dude, heavy hitter in immuno (fwiu), and cordially entertained my lol w33ded questions about immunology and, uh, combinatorics????

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

wait no i just checked, it was a question about generating viable Ab strings and computational complexity theory, something i know nothing about

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

ha me either :/ i hadnt but i googled him is he your immuno lecturer? sounds v. v. smart n_n

one of the things i like the most about our program is how much exposure u get in seminars to a variety of different lecturers. obv theyre trying to cherry pick so that u get THE GUY in pathology/signaling/&c but it does (lol so far) give a really good sense of this larger commmunity that u will be a part of. im sure its the same for u guyz but thats the biggest thing so far - that and everyone is retarded smart

лампа (Lamp), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

yeah retardo smarty pants all over the place up in this bitch

i want to do immuno/ecology stuff, but i'm not sure anyone does that???? like since yr immunological system is where rubber meets road, i'm curious about how ecological I/Os contribute to the development of immunity, both in individuals and in populations

THE DUSKY VISITOR APPEALS TO CÆSAR (gbx), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

u guys like immuno? easily my lesat fav part of pharm school

http://www.centocor.com/centocor/images/immunology.jpg

immuno is great because u can look @ shit like this for fun

kev i like how foundational immuno is how ~urgent~ a lot of the questions are. plus its a field where there is so much being done, so much being uncovered. also i just like cells and bacteria and microscopes

gbx - there is work being done in environmental immunology that looks at that (was reading about some type 1 diabetes research specifically) but i also think a lot of that stuff is done in epidemiology?
