Drop in pitches - are they worth it?

A record number of runs scored & all bowlers struggled at times. Looks like all the grounds that use these wickets are turning into roads. In my view it gives an unfair advantage to the batsmen because they hold together better than a normal wicket & nulifys some of a bowlers attacking armoury by not providing any sideways movement or spin from the roughed up areas. Most batsmen got themselves out in this series rather than the skill of the bowlers.

Views?

Tend to agree, but there are several bowlers we have seen this summer who would struggle to take a wicket on my front lawn.

If whoever was making the drop-in pitches was asked for a raging turner or a minefield, I don't doubt he'd be able to deliver. I wonder if the pronblem hasn't got a bit more to do with bean counters at the various State associations doing their bit to help the matches go five days.

an interesting issue....roebuck made sensible (as ever) comments the other day about smaeness of pitches around the country....the scg pitch was an autobahn...but so were the others 'cept brisbanal

Yes, we need to go back to the days of regional variations in pitches - seaming in Brisbane, bouncy in Perth, the batsmen's delight in Adelaide, the spinner's track in Sydney etc.

They all need more bounce, at least.

There is a dearth of top class bowlers around ATM, and the flat pitches aren't helping. Who wants to see an endless run-fest? Cricket is at its best when it's a real contest between bat and ball, and runs count for more then, too.

Agreed Taily. The lack of depth of global bowling stocks is a worry for the game. More cricket means more injured bowlers and more batsmen inflating their averages against second or even third string attacks.

Bring back Eddie Hemmings I say!
