10 reasons why the MCG is better than the SCG

1. Public Transport
The Sydney Public Transport network may be (marginally) more comprehensive than Melbourne's, but it's more expensive, trains are usually late, and the closest station to the ground is at least 20 minute's brisk walk away.
Richmond and Jolimont stations are within an easy 5 minute walk of the G.

2. Access
There are currently 9 gates being used at the G - one each for AFL and MCG Members, and the other 7 for the Southern and Olympic Stands.
The SCG has one gate for the Brewongle/Churchill Stand, two (I think)for the Members, and two for the other half of the ground - the Concourse, the Hill and the Bradman, Messenger, O'Reilly and Walters stands.

3. Layout
This ties into the access. There are very limited walkways in the main part of the SCG, much of which is as a result of the ad hoc nature of the construction and the limited access points. You spend most of your time inching along amongst a solid mass of (semi)humanity. If an emergency were to occur it would be a disaster.
The ground lost most of its character when the Hill was concreted and plastic-seated, and gained nothing in capacity, comfort or efficiency.
The G, even with its far bigger crowds, is easier to move around in and feels less crowded.

4. Facilities
The G has more variety in food and drinks available for the plebs, TVs in the standing areas in Gen. Adm., more toilets per head, more shaded areas, food vans outside (as one stand attendant said: "Nothing's too good for the workers"). The only thing there's plenty of at the SCG is beer. And even there the queues are three times the length.

5. Passouts
Out and back in, any time at the G, no problems.
Once you're in the SCG, that's it; if you leave you don't come back that day. Which adds to the crowding during breaks, the pressure on the limited facilites and:

6. Smoking
In 5 days (OK, 4 1/4) at the G, I got one tiny vagrant whiff of smoke, so brief I couldn't be sure it had been there.
At the SCG - according to the tickets a "Smoke-Free Venue" - it's almost impossible to get away from it. "Smoke-Free" apparently means (offically) that you can smoke here, here and here, but not there. Effectively, it means people smoke anywhere they think they can get away with it, which is pretty well anywhere but right next to the attendants in the Stands.
(Legal action is still a possibility)

7. Crowd behaviour
There were more ejections in the first day at Sydney than the entire game at the G. In Sydney, 99% of the crowd (except the Indian fans) seemed to be there for only one reason - Steve Waugh. Good play by the Indians was ignored or even jeered by the vast majority on the first three days, the one exception being SRT's innings.

8. General Admission?
No such thing with big crowds at the SCG. Every seat is numbered. At the G, the "Concourse" equivalent is sit where you can - you get in early on the day, you pick the seat you want.

9. Open Gates
SCG half-price from 4pm till 5, then they're open. At the G, soon as the final session starts, the gates are open.

10. Environmental
(Just to annoy BD) No recycle bins, no half-flush loos at the SCG.

There have been considerable changes to both grounds since I last visited them (some 15 odd years back),and the changes have not been to the SCG's advantage. They would be better off tearing down every bit of concrete from the old Hill to the Bradman Stand, and starting again - with a bit of thought as to practicalities.

If the SCG doesn't sharpen up its act, with the Olympic Stadium up the other end of Parramatta Road already breathing down its neck, it will be a Waverley Park-style housing development called 'Bradman Towers' (or something in the same league of tackiness) within 10 years, 20 at the outside.

Remember where you read that first.

I was at the SCG for the WC in Mar 92, then for the last day v Eng in 94-95. The pass-out thing annoyed the bejeesus out of me then. Obviously, contractually the caterers have the ground managers by the nuts and they don't want their monopoly watered down.

One of the staff supervisors told me the passout thing was because of people gaining access to the ground on other people's passes, but if the MCG can work it, no reason the SCG can't.

"In Sydney, 99% of the crowd (except the Indian fans) seemed to be there for only one reason - Steve Waugh."

Too true. I was extremely disappointed to see the crowd leaving in droves after Tugga's dismissal in the first innings. It's the type of thing a lot of the Indian 'fans' do when Tendulkar gets out in India. I was hoping we'd be above repeating them.

Come to Adelaide, the world's prettiest ground, and the friendliest...arrr by gum ;)

It's certainly the loveliest in Aust, though Bellerive isn't bad.

Last time I went to the Gabba, I tried to take a beer around the back of one of the stands, but because about six paces of this route was through a Dry Area I was nabbed by one of Russ & Joh's leftovers and told to go the long way round. I remonstrated with him, as they say in court, to the effect that a sign warning unwary sods like me of the rules as they applied, might save a lot of hassle.

Next day: at the precise spot where I had had my little contretemps with Colonel Flagg, someone had put up a sign easily visible from the spot where I had bought the beer from: 'WARNING: NO LIQUOR PASSED THIS POINT.'

(Wonder it that was one of ccc's students? The Canetoad education system strikes again...)

My favourite "public" spelling error, again in Queensland ...

(and apologies if you read this previously)

BLOOD DONERS HERE - official sign outside the old Cairns Base Hospital Blood Bank

used to turn my stomach every time I saw it

Another reason why MCG is better than SCG ...

because SCG also stands for ---

11. At least we won in Melbourne.

'WARNING: NO LIQUOR PASSED THIS POINT.'

Maybe they're bragging about their efficiency.

Talis, if you haven't done so already this evening check out this thread and 'Idiot St Kilda Supporters' on C4.

Some inconsiderate prick (or two) hurt poor Jeff's feelings/ego. (That's your mate from Page 1 of the MCG/SCG thread, who is hereafter to be known as the Dozy Wiggle.)

If it wasn't me, I will be considerably annoyed - I was saving him up for when I really needed to vent a bit, and tonight looked like the night. :(

tailender (tailender), Thursday, 15 January 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry. But doubtless there'll be other chances.

Shouldn't expect him to be back in action any time immediately, he last posted at about 6 am his local time. But he'll doubtless be back sooner rather than later, the challenge to his Grand Poo Bah status would be something no self-respecting Orca-in-a-sardine-can could possibly stand for.

Just read the two threads. Something really has twisted knickers, hasn't it? :-)

Hope I'm around when he returns to add fuel to the fire. ;-)
