Trivia: Sobers in ODIs

They were flashing Sir Garf's Test stats on the idiot box a moment ago. The fact that it's a one-day match not involving Sobers' team, led me to wonder if something had happened to the Great Man. (Apparently not.)

I was also reminded of this trivia question:

How may one-day internationals did Sir Garfield Sobers play for the West Indies, and how many runs did he score?

Made a duck in his only innings (in his only game), didn't he?

That's correct. He played his only ODI at Leeds in 1973. There's a certain appropriateness in the fact that the bloke many consider THE classical cricketer, contributed not a single run to ODI cricket.

He was caught by Bob Taylor off Chris Old after a six-ball innings without scoring. He opened the bowling, and took one wicket (Old), and a catch off Keith Boyce (Greig) and was the bowler when England's last pair (Willis and Underwood) hit the winning runs chasing 182 in the last available over. There was another ODI two days later at the Oval, but Sobers didn't play.

He would have played a couple of one day games for the World XI in 1971-2 as well, although these games were hardly rated at the time and may not even appear in the official scorebooks. All I can remember about either game is that Paul Sheahan made about 60 in one of them ...

Still have all my old Australian Cricket annuals at home, will check and see if I have these results anywhere, since there is still such interest in G StA.

He played in a one-day rules match in Melbourne for the ROW a couple of weeks after his 254. He made another duck as the ROW were bundled out for 75 ansd Australia (with John Inverarity opening with Stacxkpole) won by 10 wkts in 15 overs.

They played another 15 over match because of the early finish. Aust won again, by 6 runs. Rohan Kanhai made 52 in less than half an hour in the ROW innings. In the Australian innings John Benaud, in the course of making 29, hit a straight six into the Southern Stand, which hit the space between the sign and the clock about 10-15 feet from where I was sitting.

well you must be about my age then, Fred

I remember reading those scoresheets in the Mercury, standing alongside the milk boxes at my old primary school in Tasmania. Pretty sure BD's younger brother was with me at the time. I was obsessed by cricket even then.

I believe ROW stats are not included in official records. Greg Chapell and Dennis Lillee would not be amused.

You're right REB, they're not.
