Hookesy

All the best David Hookes, may we once again get the chance to sledge your opinions on the Cricket Show.

Anyone who slapped Tony Greig to the fence five times in a row can't be all that bad. The thoughts of all true cricket fans are with you in this worrying time.

regards,

REB

Very bad news about Hookesy. Not everyone's favourite pundit, but that
seems pretty unimportant right now.

Announced a little earlier this evening - he's gone.

Goodbye and good luck, Hookesy. For me, you will forever be belting Tawny Grigg around the MCG . . .

Rest in peace Hookesy.

RIP David Hookes.

Thanks for the memories. Not just the Centenary Test either. Without your two partnerships with Kim Hughes in Melb 82-83, Border and Thommo would have had to do a Kippax and Hooker.

I'm really sad and sickened by this. My thoughts are with his family tonight, may they receive some devine comfort from somewhere.

Thanks for being you, David. I didn't always agree with what you said, but at least you always had the guts to say it. All cricket lovers are feeling the void that you have left.

Vale, Mr Hookes.

Seriously bad situation. Noone deserves that sort of fate. Hookesy, we pretended we were you as kids in the driveway, and for teh alst few years, I enjoyed your commentary on Fox. I hope the Vixen can win a trophy this year, in honour of a well loved man.

Hooksey was undoubtably one of those cricketers you emulated as a kid in the backyard. He always had the reputation as an attacking cricketer on the field and an Aussie bloke in the pubs.

His opinions and coaching abilities looked to be taking him to the top levels of cricket coaching in Australia. In a few years he may well have been coaching his beloved Australia.

RIP Hooksey.

I can't agree with the calls of retribution though.

Feels like mob rule to me.

Any anger should be directed at the culture that allowed this to happen.

Poseiden (Poseiden), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Fellas, watch the comment on the case. The ABC Mod has raised the possibility of legal hassles if too many assumptions are made about what happened, and although I have had my issues with him lately I reckon he's right this time.

Let's just play this strictly line and length. Say whatever you like about David Hookes the cricketer/coach/multi media megastar but unless you saw what happened, no comment about Sunday night. And if you did see, don't tell me, tell the authorities. The best way to see the best outcome here is for nobody to make a Derryn Hinch hero of themself.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for that Fred. Pity something similar would do no good being said on c4 :(

Whatever happened, it was an unfitting end to a truly Australian character, someone with the seeds of greatness within him. The saddest thing is that we will now never know what he may yet have been able to achieve.

Thanks Hookesy, for your flair, your contributions to the game, and most of all for having the courage and honesty to say what you really thought.

agree with the sentiments...vic and sa should play for the Hookesey perpetual and the game played with emphasis on attack

horace, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

There is still some sense posted )rarely) on the ex-Forum:

"It would be a great tribute to the wily coach if the Vics agreed informally to call it off then turn up at 11:00 am Friday and claim a forfeit."

:)

pieman (pieman), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I went down there this afternoon after work, to leave some flowers, and pay our collective respects.

Took a long time till I could drive home . . .

:-(
