No, still cool as fuck.

Any baseball player showing signs of rhythm is cool as fuck.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago) link

And what music would you have your team play as you dug into the box, o ILB?

I think I would begin with a handful of Superchunk songs until I discovered which one produced the most hits.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago) link

i would have random eric gaffney screams/noise in short bursts to try to disrupt the pitchers equilibrium. i'd need all the help i could get. failing that i'd probably settle for the gories.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago) link

I would replace the PABM of anyone using Creed or Nickelback or some sub-Springsteenian common-people grunge hash with either Dear Nora, Beat Happening, Honeybunch, or Tullycraft. Imagine the joy of seeing Jason Giambi stride to the plate to the tune of "Songs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid To Know About".

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

I want Boss Hog's "I Dig You" for my PABM. Then I could give a wink to the pitcher and throw him off his game.

Found my Pittsburgh facts: the organist was (is?) Vince
Lascheid. Houston pinch-hitter Jesus Alou grounded into an inning-ending double play once, after which Lascheid played "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Jason Kendall has MM's "The Beautiful People" as his music.

Oh, I forgot to come here to report Rangers At-bat music after I went to the game last week. The only one I can remember now is Mark Teixiera's. He used Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower".

I remember Michael Young's was cool but I can't remember what it was.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago) link

Ray Ray used to use Master P?

Piazza used Led Zep at one of his at-bats last night, didn't help.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

Was it "When the Levee Breaks" or "Stairway to Heaven"? That'd be a HUGE difference.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

Ha - regardless, the Zep pick HAS to be "(Hats Off To) Roy Harper" (or whatever that track's called).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

no way, the zeppelin pick has to be "achilles last stand". placing and showing in this race would be "immigrant song" and "communication breakdown".

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

"Communication Breakdown," three different versions for three different at-bats.

The definitive resource?
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/story?page=atbatsongs/index

OF Ruben Sierra "The Way You Move" OutKast
Sierra requested the OutKast song without knowing the name. So in broken English, he began singing, "I like the way you move, oohh oohh, I like the way move." Well, Jeter, who was only a few feet away from the conversation started cracking up. Since then, Sierra's only at-bat music is "The Way You Move."

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago) link

The Cubbies' choices are pretty funny.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

Isn't Shawn Estes a GBV fan, and he chooses Lenny Kravitz?

Mike Barrett picks Dave Brubeck? STUD.

hstencil and I noticed this at Shea... "Patriots" can get hit hard too:

LHP Mike Stanton
"Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" Toby Keith

"Stanton feels very strongly about his country, and he thinks this song has a true message. He also has an American flag image waving when he comes out of the bullpen."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago) link

i was about to ask for someone to confirm the cubs choices because i had difficulty believing them, but at the top:

"The only organization to still have an organist play introduction music, the Cubbies have little influence on their at-bat songs.

Organist and Chicago icon Gary Pressey has been tickling the keys at Wrigley Field for years, and generally prefers traditional tunes over more current hits. Since there is no vocal accompaniment, Cubs fans have fun figuring out what song is being played and why the song was chosen -- but only Pressey can solve such mysteries."

i didn't notice this when i went to a game there. : ( i like it though.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

The sound system (if you can even call it that) at Wrigley consists of several tin cans hidden deep in the rafters I think. You can hear the organ on TV, but I have a hard time bringing any organ to mind from the games I've attended. WGN must have a mic right by Chicago icon Gary Pressey.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

bizarrely, the only entrance music i have EVER noticed while watching a game is sheffield's (used to be "in da club", can't remember what it is now). i notice it every time he comes to plate, but have never (that i can remember) heard, or at least especially taken note of, anyone elses. weeeiiiiiiiiird.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

I think the Cubs choices are great. All old stuff, none of that shitty creed shit.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago) link

I'd come out to Red House Painters "Katy Song" and make the pitcher break down into a heap of depression.

Some nice Dodger notes:

1B Hee Seop Choi - Unknown Korean Rap Song

Info from the Florida Marlins: On opening day, Hee Seop showed up with a Korean rap song, and requested that it be played every time he went up to bat. The song has taken the Marlin fans by storm. The music guys have no clue who sings the song or what it says, but the crowd loves the tune ... and so does Hee Seop.

RHP Jeff Weaver - Assortment of rock tunes

Used to come out to Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver." Weaver thought it was lame and requested that the music guys stop using the song.

the smoltz thing is too awesome. even and especially if there is no absolutely no connectoin (that i'm not pickign up on) b/w the two.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 7 August 2004 04:12 (twenty years ago) link

no, apparently when they made him a closer they asked him what music he wanted to come out of the bullpen to and he said he had no preference (he was probably still stewing about being made a closer)(hell, he's still stewing over that). "dancing queen it is then". now it's some ac/dc, a bold and inventive choice for a white reliever.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 7 August 2004 04:25 (twenty years ago) link

i luv all the 'cue X seconds in' notes, that these guys are dorking out that specifically over their at-bat music (which i sure as hell would be doing).

When I was in high school we went to baseball games all the time (Mariners), and they'd always play the beginning of Car Wash, but they'd never get to the EEEP! part, so my friend and I would do it really loudly for everyone to enjoy. To ban Car Wash and take away that experience would be a crime.

And FYI, AJ pierzynski's at-bat music is Sharp Dressed Man. Nice.

The Dodgers reported the most Hip-Hop/Rap selections with 20. The Cubs were rather sparse with just two, and that’s only if we generously interpret the genre contributions of Marky Mark and his funky bunch. The Diamondbacks are the most country-focused team with 8 total selections, although Zack Greinke accounts for a quarter of those. The Nationals were the most metal team; the Oakland A’s the most rock and roll.
