Four words per sentence. That's about right.

emblematic SportsCenter tease: "Manny Ramirez does it again... and once again, he didn't do anything!"

fucking loved this dude.. I got to enjoy him during his last great run.. that 2008 season as a dodger when he UTTERLY DESTROYED the NL was fucking magic. the events that got him to LA were all =\ but fuck it I dont live in Boston and I didnt care.. that first game he played at Dodger Stadium was probably the loudest craziest crowd I have ever seen at a game.. and he was like 0-4.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 8 April 2011 20:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Hated this dickhole for years, glad he's out of the game.

this is what he did in 2008 as a dodger: .396/.489/.743

The Louvin Spoonful (WmC), Friday, 8 April 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

A lot of people think Manny's a jackass. He IS a jackass. I'm a huge fan, but, I wouldn't argue with any WmCs who decide they hate him.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Friday, 8 April 2011 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's pretty much what it boils down to.

The Louvin Spoonful (WmC), Friday, 8 April 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i totally understand. lots of dodger fans seem to hate him now for the steroid thing and the perception that he half-assed his way through the remainder of his massive 2 yr deal once it was secured.

omar little, Friday, 8 April 2011 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

can't say how boston feels, that seems to be a more complex stew.

omar little, Friday, 8 April 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

My perception of manny is similar to rasheed wallace (another of my Favorite Athletes) in that it seems to be easier to love him when he's not actually on your team

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Friday, 8 April 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Lots of native talent squandered through indifference.

You don't put up those kind of numbers by being "indifferent". You're saying that he would have hit .350 every year if he'd been actually trying instead of squandering his talent? Just because the guy is a flake doesn't mean he didn't take his job seriously.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 8 April 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

i think maybe that might be true for the last few years.

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 8 April 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

he exits the league as one of the best hitters of all time over 15+ seasons, i don't think he squandered his talent. other than a couple of small incidents, the whole malcontent thing didn't really surface until 2008 when the red sox refused to pick up his option before the end of the season

ciderpress, Friday, 8 April 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

can't say how boston feels, that seems to be a more complex stew.

personally i loved him

always thought the boston media shit on this dude super hard relative to his attitude/level of effort, and i always thought the henry/werner/lucchino front office never had any interest in having him around, and totally hung him out to dry re pr/spin control when manny would do something "controversial" (i mostly agree with what i said upthread a couple years ago about this very topic)

honestly i think the sox wouldn't have gotten to the 2007 WS without him, and i doubt they sweep the cards in 2004 either with somebody else in his spot. i have such a hard time understanding why boston fans hated him

race card notwithstanding i mean

Suicide Demo for Kemba Walker (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 8 April 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I think Manny pretty much played up to his full potential - at the plate anyway.

is it seriously that bad in Bahston?

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 8 April 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

somehow papi gets by on the race thing

mookieproof, Friday, 8 April 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, maybe not indifference but petulance

yeah i basically feel the same way xxxp. i don't think the sox ever had any intention of keeping him after 2008 even with the club options, they essentially took advantage of the media outrage to dump him for a slightly worse but much cheaper player in Bay without pissing off the fanbase.

ciderpress, Friday, 8 April 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

papi's maybe the most media-friendly boston athlete of the last 25 years or so!

Suicide Demo for Kemba Walker (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 8 April 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

it wasn't manny's effort or ability at issue, it was his attitude. it was clear that manny thought of baseball as game, and a job, and treated it like any other game, or job, instead of a fucking religion. but that is just not enough for some people. baseball fans can be really rough on players in general. if a guy gets hurt more than like once in a season he endures cracks about being made of glass for the next three years. any "weakness" is just torn to shreds.

i mean look at the way people talk about ellsbury. in his two healthy seasons he hit .280 and .301, with 50 and 70 steals respectively. then last year he gets hurt and people are ready to let him go. !!? he was hurt, not "slacking off" or whatever betrayal you imagine, jesus

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 April 2011 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i think one of the lasting damages of the steroid era is that there are a lot of baseball fans now who care more about the players' work ethic and 'intangibles' than their actual baseball talent and on-field value

ciderpress, Friday, 8 April 2011 22:33 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, "now"??? u mad.
