Dudes -- Manny and JEFF KENT

That shit's like Office / 30 Rock level sitcom material.

David R., Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

wow, pirates cleaned up. Jason Bay not so secretly sucks btw.

bnw, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

see this is one good thing about having kids. you can play "grown up" in situations where you're feeling childlike emotions yourself.

yeah, this is a highly looooooooooooool situation here

Mr. Que, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

dumb fucking trade by boston imo. the dude has been manny in this manner time and again and he's helped them win 2 WS titles in the process and sure he's been a little worse offensively this year but jason bay?

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:38 (fifteen years ago) link

now batting for the Boston Red Sox. . . .

Mr. Que, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link

would it be surprising if bay was better than manfred 2 years down the line?

cankles, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

no

how close did some of you guys come to hari-kari when nomar got traded for orlando cabrera in 2004?? or was that ok because beat writers didnt have a problem with him

deeznuts, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I actually think it's probably a good baseball trade, all-told, for the sox. But that doesn't stop me from being seriously seriously bummed ;_;

Manny Ramirez is my favorite player in Major League Baseball.

also, definitely liked Garciapopup but never looooved him like Manny.

G00blar, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Um Manny v2008 isn't Manny v2001-2006 guys. It's entirely conceivable that Jason Bay is better this year and next year than what Manny is and he's a lot cheaper.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

thats an understandable reaction - the facts of the matter are the dude, the dudes manager, & the dudes teammates all wanted him out of boston. boston got younger & cheaper & more or less replaced his production (considering age + ability - mannys obviously a better hitter, but he's in decline) in return for a talented but so-far shitty reliever & a 4th OF

good trade xp to g00b

deeznuts, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Jason Bay better bring some gold-plated chemistry with him

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I would watch out for batteries if I was him. Those things hurt like a motherfucker.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

from what i can tell he makes jd drew look like david ortiz in the charisma department but i could be wrong

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I find that hard to believe.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

JD Drew has been since snubbing the Phillies one of the most universally reviled (possibly unfairly so) players outside of Barry Bonds at virtually every junction in his playing career. Also Jason Bay is from Canada.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link

boston loves jd drew now, right?

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link

That's my evidence. What's yours?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link

That Jason Bay is a jerk that is, not that Boston luvs Drew now.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:00 (fifteen years ago) link

i never said bay was a jerk, i said he was charisma free.

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

"do keep up"

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm not following the arguments here at all.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

the post gabbneb era on ILB

omar little, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway Boston loves Drew because he's playing well. They'll love Bay if he does as well. They will throw batteries at either (or both) if they don't.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

can't believe this loser has the most insightful perspective on ilb. sox will suffer a short term loss and a long term gain.

yankees check the gums and teeth like they're shopping for thoroughbreds.
sox USE NUMBERZ AND METRICS AND SHIT. you know i would too in that strata of salaries.

sanskrit, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:57 (fifteen years ago) link

deeznuts, Thursday, 31 July 2008 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, Boston beat writers + Nomar sure had a lovey-dovey relationship in 2004.

ITP: Some real armchair analysis using SABR stats

Looking at the very last table of data on the bottom of the page:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=2974

AB/HR: from 1998 to 2006 = around 12-13. 2007-8 = 18+. Power is starting to go.
BB/PA: 2008 is the lowest since 1997. bordering on career low. Losing selectiveness.
BB/SO: 2008 is lowest since 2001, 2nd lowest since 1994. Confirms above.
IsoP: 2007-2008 are lowest since 1997. Pretty huge drop here.
SecA: 2007-2008 are about 100 points lower than career average

If Manny were 30 or 32, I'd think he'd have some chance to counter these downswings but........ he's 36.

Also had the pleasure to hear someone's grandfather on a CT-area call-in show (not ESPN Radio) make the same stink most folks will make regarding Jason Bay's who-dat status

Here's something that you all were waiting for:

Bonds 2007 vs. Manny 2008:
BA: .276 : .299
OBP: .480 : .398
SLG: .565 : .529
AB/HR: 12.1 : 18.3
BB/PA: .277 : .122
BB/SO: 2.44 : 0.61
IsoP: .288 : .230
SecA: .691 : .375

One guy wants $20M, one guy wants $0.375M

I don't even know when it's going to hit that he's gone...I'm pretty much in baseball shock. Manny was there for pretty much every relevant moment of my generation's Red Sox fandom. Now we'll get to see his first at-bat in Dodger blue and wonder what sucker team overpays him this offseason.

When you add in Moss and Hansen, the money, and the fact that the team didn't have time to address its other, more pressing needs, it isn't even that great of a trade. Or even a good one. But there's two months of baseball left to soldier through. So welcome, Jason Bay, and any grudges we hold are no knock on you. I guess it was crazy to hope that this story was ever going to end well.

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 August 2008 05:41 (fifteen years ago) link

The Epstein/Henry Red Sox have been completely unsentimental when it comes to dealing admired stars who have helped them win in the past (or simply letting them walk), so I'm surprised by some of the "how could they??" reactions from Red Sox fans who should be used to this by now. They should also be used to seeing these guys make smart decisions -- they brought in the top OF on the trading market, he's locked up for 2009 and far below his free market value (for Boston this trade was as much about securing someone for next year as anything else -- you won't find an OF this good and cheap during the offseason), and kept him away from their direct competition (who also wanted him). It's a brilliant trade.

They are counting on him to carry them into October and beyond.

Just as soon as they can find him.

Three hours after the trade, Ned Colletti, Dodger general manager, was asked whether he had spoken to Ramirez.

"I left him a message," said Colletti.

Four hours after the trade, Dodger Manager Joe Torre was asked whether he had spoken to Ramirez.

"I left him a message," said Torre.

Days after the Angels grabbed the national sports spotlight by trading for quiet slugger Mark Teixeira, the Dodgers have thrown a massive counterpunch by acquiring a guy who is part Hollywood and part Dagwood.

A guy who occasionally swings like Babe Ruth and is consistently as nutty as a Baby Ruth.

The only thing that flops around more than his trademark dreadlocks are his moods.

IT BEGINS

manny was my favorite player on the team i've been following since i went to my first game in 1978. and while i'm sad to see him go i understand that it's probably for the best that he left. and i also understand that management is taking a HUGE risk by dealing their most reliable and productive bat. but it seems like it had to happen, for everyone involved. that doesn't make it fun though.

if bay is the second coming of danny cater though there ought to be riots on lansdowne.

Huh. Christina Kahrl reminds us that Bay's already locked in at $7.5 million for 2009, and will even then be a year short of eligibility as a free agent, meaning that the Sox have him under control in his age-30 and age-31 seasons, at which point they can probably afford to let him go wherever he wishes.
