he is now at 9.4 rwar for the season. his closest competitor is robinson cano, who has played 21 more games, at 6.2. fwar is a bit more circumspect, but still gives him significant lead.

he leads the majors in stolen bases, runs scored and ops+

randal grichuk, whom the angels took one pick ahead of trout, is having a nice season in high-a ball.

this fucking guy.

mookieproof, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

he's probably not gonna top A-Rods ridiculous age 20 season but yeah this is getting stupid

frogbs, Monday, 3 September 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

He's only not going to top it cuz he missed a month (although to be fair to A-Rod he only played 146 games it looks like.)

Totally proves the draft is a complete crapshoot.

The Los Angeles Angels renewed the contract of AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout for $510,000. The salary is $20,000 above the major league minimum.

seems a bit like leaving a $1 tip on a $100 check. there must be ways of saving money that don't involve insulting your best player

mookieproof, Saturday, 2 March 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

every player goes through this and they already gave him 1+ mil just to sign. he'll buy a few yachts once he hits arb.

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Saturday, 2 March 2013 22:40 (twelve years ago)

but don't mind me i have trouble treating baseball contracts with the appropriate relativity

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Saturday, 2 March 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

If B-R numbers are right, it doesn't look like recent Rookies of the Year have gotten massive bumps in their next season.

I don't know that throwing him an extra $500k this season buys any more loyalty when the time comes for his $200mn contract in a few seasons.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 4 March 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

scratch that - http://mlb.sbnation.com/2013/3/4/4062060/mike-trout-salary-los-angeles-angels

increases were quite a bit larger, just not in raw $$$

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 4 March 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

i'm sure he'll do v. well in arbitration and that he'll go wherever the money is when he's a free agent. if the angels had a policy of paying ppl the absolute minimum they had to, then fine. the extra $20k is weird tho.

it's obviously in trout's best interests to play hard and everything. it just seems like a bit more might be warranted in an effort to keep your best player happy and feeling valued.

mookieproof, Monday, 4 March 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)

http://www.billjamesonline.com/mike_trout_runs__games/

The record that Mike Trout could threaten is the post-WWII tally for runs scored: 152, collected by Jeff Bagwell in 2000. And Trout could be the first player to score more runs than games played since Rickey Henderson accomplished the feat in 1985.

My first bold prediction for 2013? That he does one or the other. Mike Trout with either score 152+ runs in 2013, or he’ll score more runs than games played.

Two-run homer first time up tonight. If it weren't for that (still weird) -1.4 defensive number, he'd probably be on his way to about a 12.0 WAR for the year.

H.P, Saturday, 4 May 2024 02:52 (one year ago)

as much as there is a lot of what-if w/Trout, he's still a pretty formidable player when healthy and as a hitter there's more room for adjustment as he ages even after dealing w/many injuries. there's time for him to add to his stats (he's not old!) It's going to be interesting to watch what happens. i think overall Bryce Harper has probably been more of a what-if but the #winning has helped distract from that.

of course these guys are both (*probably* in Bryce's case) HOFers, unlike other worst-case what-ifs like Mark Prior.

Slow start (honestly, I forgot he was back). I had it in my mind that he was perennially a slow starter, but checked his splits and that's not true: historically, April is one his best months. He has hit three home runs. I really hope he comes back.

clemenza, Thursday, 10 April 2025 14:55 (five months ago)

Did he finish last year injured? I know he’s also adapting to right field and there’s been some clips of him not being great there.

triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 10 April 2025 15:01 (five months ago)

Statcast thinks he's been very unlucky:

his IRL slash:
.179/.316/.436 = .751

vs. his X-slash:
.273/.414/.636 = 1.050

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 10 April 2025 15:59 (five months ago)

I think he finished the year injured, yes; hitting in bad luck happens, so that's encouraging.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 14 August 2025 03:49 (one month ago)

iirc that's a hat trick, not a golden sombrero

(can't imagine a golden sombrero has happened too often against a pitcher that only went four innings, but three Ks is still impressive)

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 August 2025 03:57 (one month ago)

Trout's slash line is so depressing

frogbs, Thursday, 14 August 2025 04:04 (one month ago)

he came into tonight with a .240/.367/.458 line! which is a 127 OPS+!

he's 11th in fWAR for all 33+ players

i mean he's not going to win a fourth MVP but any team would be totally happy to employ him (if not at his current salary)

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 August 2025 04:58 (one month ago)

^^ true. i took a look at his lines just now, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he could put together one more (healthy) miraculous year, even now. you could never fully count it out.

but also, he’s stolen 14 bases in 2020-now, total. his defense is now (heavily?) minus, not plus. his ISO is the lowest it’s ever been. his strikeout% is the highest it’s ever been. the OBP is still high because he’s walking 16% of the time (elite!), but so much of that is reputation and can quickly shift

z_tbd, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:08 (one month ago)

anyway not being disagreeable, i would love to watch trout every day, even in decay mode

z_tbd, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:09 (one month ago)

He has been getting a LOT of fastballs lately. I have a feeling that he can make the adjustment and, if they keep challenging him, people are going to get burned.

timellison, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:14 (one month ago)

He hasn't played in the field since he came back end of May. If he has negative defense this year, that was also him playing RF regularly for the first time.

timellison, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:19 (one month ago)

oh…gotcha! yeah, i shouldn’t say anything at all about him. you can tell a lot from a stat line but even more just from watching on a daily basis, of course. but yeah, i guess what i’m reading as ‘negative’ defense via fangraphs is just the penalty for being the DH and/or playing RF instead of CF

z_tbd, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:21 (one month ago)

he's 18th in the majors with a .367 OBP and 32nd with an .825 OPS

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:23 (one month ago)
