he is now at 9.4 rwar for the season. his closest competitor is robinson cano, who has played 21 more games, at 6.2. fwar is a bit more circumspect, but still gives him significant lead.
he leads the majors in stolen bases, runs scored and ops+
randal grichuk, whom the angels took one pick ahead of trout, is having a nice season in high-a ball.

He's only not going to top it cuz he missed a month (although to be fair to A-Rod he only played 146 games it looks like.)

The Los Angeles Angels renewed the contract of AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout for $510,000. The salary is $20,000 above the major league minimum.
seems a bit like leaving a $1 tip on a $100 check. there must be ways of saving money that don't involve insulting your best player

If B-R numbers are right, it doesn't look like recent Rookies of the Year have gotten massive bumps in their next season.
I don't know that throwing him an extra $500k this season buys any more loyalty when the time comes for his $200mn contract in a few seasons.

― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 4 March 2013 17:35 (thirteen years ago)
i'm sure he'll do v. well in arbitration and that he'll go wherever the money is when he's a free agent. if the angels had a policy of paying ppl the absolute minimum they had to, then fine. the extra $20k is weird tho.
it's obviously in trout's best interests to play hard and everything. it just seems like a bit more might be warranted in an effort to keep your best player happy and feeling valued.

http://www.billjamesonline.com/mike_trout_runs__games/
The record that Mike Trout could threaten is the post-WWII tally for runs scored: 152, collected by Jeff Bagwell in 2000. And Trout could be the first player to score more runs than games played since Rickey Henderson accomplished the feat in 1985. My first bold prediction for 2013? That he does one or the other. Mike Trout with either score 152+ runs in 2013, or he’ll score more runs than games played.

Angels star Mike Trout met with the team yesterday to discuss his health outlook and potential means of keeping him healthier moving forward. The longtime center fielder now tells reporters that he’ll be shifting to right field in an effort to keep him on the field with more regularity.
― z_tbd, Monday, 17 February 2025 17:34 (one year ago)
Slow start (honestly, I forgot he was back). I had it in my mind that he was perennially a slow starter, but checked his splits and that's not true: historically, April is one his best months. He has hit three home runs. I really hope he comes back.
― clemenza, Thursday, 10 April 2025 14:55 (one year ago)
Did he finish last year injured? I know he’s also adapting to right field and there’s been some clips of him not being great there.

― frogbs, Thursday, 14 August 2025 04:04 (eight months ago)
he came into tonight with a .240/.367/.458 line! which is a 127 OPS+!
he's 11th in fWAR for all 33+ players
i mean he's not going to win a fourth MVP but any team would be totally happy to employ him (if not at his current salary)
― mookieproof, Thursday, 14 August 2025 04:58 (eight months ago)
^^ true. i took a look at his lines just now, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he could put together one more (healthy) miraculous year, even now. you could never fully count it out.
but also, he’s stolen 14 bases in 2020-now, total. his defense is now (heavily?) minus, not plus. his ISO is the lowest it’s ever been. his strikeout% is the highest it’s ever been. the OBP is still high because he’s walking 16% of the time (elite!), but so much of that is reputation and can quickly shift
― z_tbd, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:08 (eight months ago)

He has been getting a LOT of fastballs lately. I have a feeling that he can make the adjustment and, if they keep challenging him, people are going to get burned.
― timellison, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:14 (eight months ago)
He hasn't played in the field since he came back end of May. If he has negative defense this year, that was also him playing RF regularly for the first time.
― timellison, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:19 (eight months ago)
oh…gotcha! yeah, i shouldn’t say anything at all about him. you can tell a lot from a stat line but even more just from watching on a daily basis, of course. but yeah, i guess what i’m reading as ‘negative’ defense via fangraphs is just the penalty for being the DH and/or playing RF instead of CF
― z_tbd, Thursday, 14 August 2025 05:21 (eight months ago)
he's 18th in the majors with a .367 OBP and 32nd with an .825 OPS

As an Angels fan, I still enjoy getting to see him play, whatever he can contribute, which was a fair amount this past year. A lot of talk about him returning to the OF, maybe he wants that, but him at DH is pretty cool. Halos have a logjam there if that's still in the cards with Jorge Soler still on the team. If Adell wants to tackle playing center again next year, more power to him.
