lag∞n, Monday, 14 October 2013 04:04 (ten years ago) link

well, that's a bad loss

― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius)

There were about ten things they should have done, Fielder should have caught that foul ball, Benoit should have come out for the ninth, they should have loaded the bases, it was 20 minutes of staring into the headlights for the Tigers after the GS.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 14 October 2013 04:05 (ten years ago) link

Pretty much.

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 04:05 (ten years ago) link

lag∞n, Monday, 14 October 2013 04:06 (ten years ago) link

a det-stl rerun at least provides the opportunity for a team that doesn't make everyone barf out their butts to win the world series

zachylon otm, also at least Det hasn't won the whole thing since '84

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:28 (ten years ago) link

The first thing that baffled me last night was the short leash on Veras. He entered with a four-run lead in the eighth, is the "eight inning guy" (or the "seventh inning guy"), threw three pitches. And, of course, I'm not sure why you would want to bring in Benoit with the bases loaded.

That was the one-year anniversary of Valverde's blown save against the Yankees. He entered with a four-run lead.

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 13:30 (ten years ago) link

eighth

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 13:31 (ten years ago) link

Jim Leyland had the option to bring in Phil Coke in that situation to go lefty-on-lefty, and he ascribed his decision to the fact that “Coke hadn’t pitched a big game for quite a while.”

gotta have a guy on the LCS roster for those nonbig games

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:25 (ten years ago) link

again, why is he on the roster then?

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:31 (ten years ago) link

anyone know how many times a slam has resulted in four pitchers being charged with one run apiece?

mookieproof, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:39 (ten years ago) link

that is nuts, i don't think a Baseball Ref search will do it

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:41 (ten years ago) link

Rob Neyer quotes a long back-and-forth this morning between Dan Plesac and Daryl Hamilton on bringing in Coke. I don't get the MLB Network--maybe you all saw the exchange last night.

the tigers are pretty boring dude

dodgers are probably the most interesting team left

k3vin k., Monday, 14 October 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

i like the uniforms of all the remaining teams

lag∞n, Monday, 14 October 2013 15:09 (ten years ago) link

I mentioned the other day about Verlander's career/post-season stats being very close. Looked at Ortiz this morning, and his slash stats are now almost identical:

Regular Season: .287/.381/.549
Post-Season: .284/.394/.542

Obviously, he sure picks his spots.

I'd tentatively still give Detroit an edge the rest of the way, based on (duh) starting pitching and Cabrera showing signs of life.
