Jim Leyland had the option to bring in Phil Coke in that situation to go lefty-on-lefty, and he ascribed his decision to the fact that “Coke hadn’t pitched a big game for quite a while.”

gotta have a guy on the LCS roster for those nonbig games

Jim Leyland had the option to bring in Phil Coke in that situation to go lefty-on-lefty, and he ascribed his decision to the fact that “Coke has sucked against all hitters all year.”

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago)

again, why is he on the roster then?

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago)

anyone know how many times a slam has resulted in four pitchers being charged with one run apiece?

mookieproof, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago)

that is nuts, i don't think a Baseball Ref search will do it

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:41 (eleven years ago)

Rob Neyer quotes a long back-and-forth this morning between Dan Plesac and Daryl Hamilton on bringing in Coke. I don't get the MLB Network--maybe you all saw the exchange last night.

how is bos-st louis rerun worse/better than detroit-st louis rerun

a det-stl rerun at least provides the opportunity for a team that doesn't make everyone barf out their butts to win the world series

the tigers are pretty boring dude

dodgers are probably the most interesting team left

i like the uniforms of all the remaining teams

I mentioned the other day about Verlander's career/post-season stats being very close. Looked at Ortiz this morning, and his slash stats are now almost identical:

Regular Season: .287/.381/.549
Post-Season: .284/.394/.542

Obviously, he sure picks his spots.

I'd tentatively still give Detroit an edge the rest of the way, based on (duh) starting pitching and Cabrera showing signs of life.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2013 15:14 (eleven years ago)

ortiz was insane for the first ~2/3 of his post season career and has been terrible since is m/l what it boils down to... until last night B-)

Pretty sure that's Chuck Eddy center frame, directly above--strange, as Chuck's from Detroit.

Agreed about the Dodgers, but I don't think the Tigers are boring -- not with three 200+ K pitchers, one of the best hitters in the game, one of the best defensive shortstops, two comically bad corner infielders, and 3-4-5 hitters who are hysterically slow/gimpy.

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:19 (eleven years ago)

It's an expression, Morbius--I'm not saying he willfully picks them. I'm actually suggesting that his post-season record isn't quite as superhuman as selective memory might indicate (without wanting to say so, because I don't want to diminish someone who's had so many memorable hits--most of them concentrated in 2004/07, hence the casual aside).

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:28 (eleven years ago)

how dare you frankly

@Rosenberg_Mike
Lefties hit .188 off Benoit this year, with 1 HR in 151 PA. WHY DIDN'T LEYLAND KNOW HE WOULD GIVE UP A HOMER? #duh

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago)

Posnanski taking note of the four pitchers responsible for the grand slam, also complaining about four-hour 1-0 games--clearly monitoring ILB.

Surprised how far back some of them go--four in the '80s, the first in 1961. Didn't check the managers, but one of them was Sparky with Detroit ("Captain Hook").

i didn't say anything about "excitement"

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Monday, 14 October 2013 23:28 (eleven years ago)

the dodgers aren't going to win for one thing, and anyway i can't really in good faith root for a team that just spent a billion dollars after hating the yankees for the same thing over the past decade

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Monday, 14 October 2013 23:29 (eleven years ago)

tigers meanwhile have the best starting pitching in baseball and the best hitter in baseball and a torii hunter who's never gotten to play in a WS.

‏@gregorMLB 9m
Victorino claims he's disappointed Verlander said he sometimes gets hit by strikes. Guess he forgot when Buehrle hit him on pitch in zone.

‏@gregorMLB 9m
Victorino: "If he can prove to me and show me which one he thought was a strike that was a legitimate strike that I got hit on..."

‏@gregorMLB 8m
All Verlander has to do is pull up GameDay from Sept. 21: Buehrle vs. Victorino. HBP was an obvious strike and registered as such. #BlueJays

Alright, some information is coming in. My friend was with his girlfriend most of the morning.

"Well that guy had already said a racist comment to this guy who is a Detroit fan who was wearing a Prince Fielder jersey and looks like him."

"That woman was his wife/girlfriend/baby mama and she had already been mad at him for being an ass and because they almost kicked his ass. But the homerun landed behind her but she got the ball. She jumped up in celebration and was so happy and some of us were saying 'just throw it back!'".

"Then her guy, the asshole, ripped it from her hand and threw it back and they came to take him away. That Detroit fan stood up and said 'see you later' and that ass hole fan said 'sit down trevon' which is a black name racist thing to say and so about 5 police held back that big black man and his dad, and they escorted both parties (including the poor girl who caught it) out of the park. But later the detroit fans came back as they should have and many Red Sox fans went over and shook his hand and apologized".

I'm fairly certain that the Detroit fan my friend was talking about is not in the OP's .gif, but I'll include a picture once I get it off my phone.
