I showed the Ortiz clip four times in class yesterday. It really is incredible. Once for Ortiz and the drama of the moment, once focussing on Hunter, once focussing on the cop, and a fourth time for the bullpen catcher.
Ortiz obviously added to his legend (exaggerated or not). If it's possible to not make a catch and add to your defensive legend (again, exaggerated or not), then I think Hunter did too.

I think by definition calling a player who is not HOF-caliber a "legend" is exaggerated.
― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:44 (ten years ago) link
C'mon...again, even if you don't agree, the popular perception of Ortiz is that he's a legendary post-season performer. (If you're conceding that that's true and just disagreeing with the perception, that's fine.)
― clemenza, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:47 (ten years ago) link
I don't know if Buehrle will ever go to the HOF, but he'll be legendary for me because of that Buehrle-meter play.
― cops on horse (WilliamC), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:49 (ten years ago) link
Lots of players who aren't in the HOF are legendary for a variety of reasons: Mark Fidrych, Dusty Rhodes, Joe Pepitone, on and on and on. As someone who's regularly dismissing the HOF, you're attaching a great deal of importance to it on this one narrow point.

can't believe the best hitter is batting second, a spot reserved for a speedy player who can lay down a bunt

Friend who's been nonstop complaining about Jackson saw the lineup and said he hates it because it is an obvious panic move.
― Andy K, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 19:32 (ten years ago) link
IS LEYLAND JUST GOING TO SIT THERE AND WATCH THE SEASON SLIP AWAY OR IS HE...WHAT THE FUCK? NOW he's doing something?! Don't like it. They had so much success during the season and this sudden, drastic move is pure panic. Spineless.
― Andy K, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 19:39 (ten years ago) link
IF LEYLAND ACTUALLY GAVE A SHIT ABOUT HIS OFFENSE REFUSING TO SHOW UP HE'D DH MIGGY, PUT V-MART IN LEFT, PERALTA AT 2ND, INFANTE AT SHORT, CALL UP CASTELLANOS FOR THE BENCH, AND HAVE QBERRY AVAILABLE TO RUN -- OH THAT'S RIGHT, QBERRY IS ON THE RED SOX BECAUSE DUMBROWSKI DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE TALENT. ENJOY YOUR WINTER, BOYS. GOD.

detroit deserves to lose for having that tunnel right behind home plate what a dreadful decision

Cabrera batting second is so funny. Bunts, hit-and-run, anything could happen. (Batting order mostly proven to be not as important as believed anyway.)

McCarver says all slow-motion replays of check swings look like strikes...pauses to watch slow-motion replay of check swing...concludes yes, based on slow-motion replay, that was definitely a strike.
