shocker of shockers!

(c'mon Sisco, just one K, I don't care how many BBs and HRs you hand out in the process, just keep that K rate up).

Rob Neyer (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 25 May 2006 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

What a terrible fucking team.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Thursday, 25 May 2006 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

It'd be a triumph if they took one of 3 in the Bronx.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 May 2006 12:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Loria and whatever bonehead (McClatschy?) owns the Pirates must be thankful for the Royals making them look at least better than KC.

Of course, the Cubs got swept by the Marlins this week, so who really is pitiful?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:43 (eighteen years ago) link

o rly?

Angel Berroa hit a three-run homer to left field off Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and lead the Royals to their first win since May 10.

maura (maura), Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:13 (eighteen years ago) link

KC = yankee kryptonite!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:39 (eighteen years ago) link

i like to think of that home run as revenge for farnsworth bodyslamming affledt last year.

maura (maura), Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:13 (eighteen years ago) link

baird: finally gone.

OAKLAND -- After weeks of speculation, the Royals replaced general manager Allard Baird with Dayton Moore of the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Baird, the team's general manager since 2000, was dismissed with the Royals holding the worst record in the Majors at 13-37.

Moore, 39, becomes the sixth general manager in franchise history.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:45 (eighteen years ago) link

i hope they gave moore complete control over personnel decisions

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:52 (eighteen years ago) link

isn't it drayton?

besides...control is one thing, but a budget is an entirely different kettle of fish. interesting, though.

i had just sort of presumed that allaird baird had already been fired.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 23:57 (eighteen years ago) link

With his 2 run shot off of Chad Harville on Saturday, Reggie Sanders became only the fifth player in MLB history to compile both 300 HRs and 300 SBs (behind Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds and Andre Dawson).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 12 June 2006 23:11 (eighteen years ago) link

since joined by Steve Finley?

hey, it looks like they're gonna sweep the Hopeless Series from Pittsburgh!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Dawson's the only non-Giant in that club.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Willie Mays is the only Met!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Sanders goes into this weekend needing one home run to become the only active player with double-digit homers in 15 straight seasons... [Bonds only had 5 last year in 14 games].

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
hey, KC is 18-20 since Baird was fired!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 14 July 2006 13:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow! They're almost not sub-500!

When the hell did Mark Teahen figure out how to play?!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 30 July 2006 00:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean the guy isn't the second coming of David Wright, but this is a far cry from the Sean Burroughs-like comparisons he was getting last year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 30 July 2006 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Royals sweep Sox!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 11 August 2006 05:39 (eighteen years ago) link

anybody know the latest and greatest on greinke?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 11 August 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago) link

published last night:

Latest on Zack: Zack Greinke threw seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts but had a no-decision in Wichita's 3-2 win over San Antonio. Since July 1, Greinke has a 3.14 ERA with 58 strikeouts and only seven walks in 51 2/3 innings.

There are no plans to bring up Greinke before September, Bell said.

maura (maura), Friday, 11 August 2006 12:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Mark Teahan's 2nd half:

.311 / .414 / .615 (10 2B, 3 3B, 7 HR) w/ 21 BB against 24 Ks.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Bottom of the 1st: KC 10 - CLE 1

Final, end of the 10th: CLE 15 - KC 13

Another loss tomorrow and they will be mathematically eliminated.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 24 August 2006 04:10 (eighteen years ago) link

The Royals might not be that bad if they had any pitching whatsoever.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 24 August 2006 05:13 (eighteen years ago) link

AAA, it looks like - his splits before and after getting sent down in June are ridiculous; I think he had to work to get his pre-AS numbers up to that level.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Suddenly that 2002 draft doesn't look so crappy does it.

Yeah, the month-by-month breakdown is more dramatic:

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

It's a good thing the Royals' can't-miss prospect isn't a 3B!

:p

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Tho I guess they're thinking of moving Alex Gordon to 1B, maybe, and cutting bait on Huber? Of course, Gordon's at least 1 year away from making the team, I assume.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:40 (eighteen years ago) link

What got into Teahen? Steroids!

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:31 (eighteen years ago) link

9 SB to 0 CS and 7 triples is pretty impressive for a guy who weighs 220 lbs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Deceptive speed!

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Momentum!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 August 2006 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Carl Crawford is 220#... he has 43 SBs.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 24 August 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

He's also Carl Crawford.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 August 2006 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Teahen's done for the season, apparently he's been playing with a torn labrum (?!) and they've decided to shut him down and opt for surgery. Alex Gordon will not be called up.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

am i batty or are they actually kind of putting together a not terrible youngish team?

shealy, keppinger, teahen, gathright, dejesus...are they wedded to gordon at 3rd or is he getting reps at short in the minors, too?

if there pitching situation weren't such a shambles...seems like they have the arms, but what in god's name is happening to those kids?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 9 September 2006 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

45-52 Since June 15th? No longer the worst team in baseball? Maybe the Royals could flirt with .500 next year if they got one or two solid pitchers.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 1 October 2006 22:48 (eighteen years ago) link

samdawg25 (Columbia, MO): Royals lose first pick in MLB draft. Is not having the worst record in baseball worth it?

Joe Sheehan: If I remember correctly, Rany Jazayerli concluded that the biggest dropoff in value in the draft was from the first pick to the second. So I'm going to guess that whatever psychic benefit and marketing magic you derive from being #29 in baseball will be less than that.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:47 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not like they would sign the guy deserving of the #1 overall pick anyway, what with the Borases of the world.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

They did sign Hochevar ya know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:18 (eighteen years ago) link

And Alex Gordon seems to have been a good signing too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

six months pass...
Kyle (KC): What are your feelings about the Meche signing now? This is before his duel with Buehrle last night. Meche - 1 win 1 loss 2.22 era in 4 starts 28.1 IP 7 ER Dice K - 2wins 2 losses 4.00 era in 4 starts 27.0 IP 12 ER

Rob Neyer: (12:56 PM ET ) I think we're three weeks into a 260-week contract.

Timely as he's about to hit the IL for pulling his groin running out a single.

You see - if he’d have walked that wouldn’t have happened! *taps head*
