Bee OK, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 05:47 (seven years ago) link

at least Madison Bumgarner is maybe starting to understand:

http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Dodgers-mock-Bumgarner-on-social-media-plus-why-9235611.php

Neither Bumgarner nor Giants manager Bruce Bochy directly stated the reason, but a few on-the-record comments and some off the record suggest that after the seventh inning ended with the Puig incident, Bochy spoke to Bumgarner in the dugout and concluded his pitcher had expended too much energy and was too hyped up from the scuffle to continue. So Bochy decided to pinch-hit for Bumgarner.

The rivalry in San Francisco began at Seals Stadium in 1958 — rookie Orlando Cepeda homered as the Giants trounced Don Drysdale 8-0 in the first big-league game on the West Coast — and moved to Candlestick Park and eventually Pacific Bell Park, and Scully recalled every step of the way, starting when he called games just a row behind fans at Seals Stadium.

“A fellow would turn around and just say to me, ‘Do you have a match?’” Scully said. “It was that informal and that close.”

In those days, broadcasters read the commercials between innings, and Scully sometimes found himself in competition with Giants fans, especially when he read beer commercials.

“They’d start hollering the names of all the other brands of beer that they could possibly think of,” Scully said, “so that taught us to record all the commercials rather than be heckled by the fans.”

At Candlestick, fans at Dodgers-Giants games sometimes were as competitive as the players, not necessarily in a good way.

“At Candlestick, the wind was a nightmare,” Scully said, “but I also thought that the surroundings affected the personality of the audience. I could be completely wrong, but it was cold, raw, windy, and I think the people in the stands were unhappy and sometimes would take their unhappiness out.

“But once they moved to AT&T Park, it’s completely different. The fans are good-natured, they’re happy, they’re fair, they’re wonderful. … The weather at AT&T has made it a wonderful party atmosphere. No meanness at all.”

That’s where Scully’s career will end and a long, wonderful chapter of Giants-Dodgers lore will close. In his 67th year chronicling and analyzing two storied teams, Scully will sign off for the last time and extend a “very pleasant good evening” to a rivalry that wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Bee OK, Saturday, 24 September 2016 02:53 (seven years ago) link

Even if the Giants make the post-season, I cannot imagine the bullpen managing any stress situation confidently, or anything at all for that matter.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 24 September 2016 04:36 (seven years ago) link

won't need them in the offs, just ride the starters til the wheels all off

what?

http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Giants-acquire-infielder-Cueto-to-start-Thursday-9311710.php

The Giants acquired infielder Gordon Beckham from the Braves to boost the right side of the bench and lineup in light of Eduardo Nuñez's hamstring strain. They also placed outfielder Mac Williamson on the 60-day disabled list with a quadriceps strain, ending his season.

Minor-league infielder Rich Rodriguez went to the Braves in the deal.

The Giants also promoted a third catcher, former Pittsburgh Pirate Tony Sanchez, giving manager Bruce Bochy more flexibility in pinch-hitting his backup catcher and making defensive moves. Lastly, they designated left-hander Matt Reynolds for assignment to clear another 40-man spot.

at least one run in the first inning, a very good sign.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 02:32 (seven years ago) link

i probably wrote that too soon. they could have scored even more runs in the first.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 02:38 (seven years ago) link

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link

There goes my hopes of Matt Reynolds of the Giants pitching to Matt Reynolds of the Mets in a post season game

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 04:05 (seven years ago) link
