http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Giants-notes-Duffy-visits-Nu-ez-iffy-for-9403227.php

Former Giants third baseman Matt Duffy stopped by the clubhouse before Wednesday’s game and wished his old pals well in their quest for a playoff bid.
“I’ll give myself to the end of the season to root for them,” said Duffy, who was shipped to Tampa Bay at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. “Next year, they’re on their own.”

Duffy is recovering from Achilles surgery and walked in a protective boot Wednesday, the first day he was able to ditch his crutches. He’ll remain in a boot six weeks and anticipates doing full baseball activity in early January.
He was in the Bay Area to clear out his place in Walnut Creek and wanted to visit with his old teammates one more time before returning home to Southern California.

“I obviously care about this organization a lot,” Duffy said. “I think I always will -- as long as they’re not playing us. I’m definitely rooting for them the rest of the way.”

Duffy, whose last game as a Giant was June 19, didn’t want to hear about his old team’s ongoing second-half struggles. The Giants are 26-41 since the All-Star break.

“The last five years or whatever, it’s the same story almost,” he said. “Everybody counts the Giants out until the last few weeks or whatever. Even in 2014, we were struggling. You’ve just got to get in. Once you get in, anything can happen. It’s a different ballgame. For the most part, you’ve got three (starters). It’s managed differently. The intensity ramps up. Guys who can keep calm in those situations are the guys that come out on top. That’s what this group has.”

The Giants' feeling on the Cardinals-Reds brouhaha from Thursday night is, it's none of our business.

General manager Bobby Evans said Friday that it was not the Giants' place to call the league and opine whether the outcome at Busch Stadium, a 4-3 St. Louis victory, should be overturned.

There was no indication the Reds filed a formal protest arguing that Yadier Molina's game-winning double actually bounced over the left-field wall and should have been ruled an automatic double, which would have forced baserunner Matt Carpenter to stop at third. Instead, Carpenter scored to give St. Louis a crucial win impact the wild-card race and the Giants.

The Reds wanted a replay challenge but did not inform the umpires in time.
"There is no recourse for a third party," Evans said. "Our focus has to be here."

Giants fans hoped the Reds would protest the game. If the protest were upheld, Cincinnati and St. Louis would have to meet again to pick up the game from the point of the protest.

It made little sense for the Reds to protest. They are going home for the winter, and I can't imagine they want to fly to St. Louis to play Monday, knowing the whole thing could be finished on one pitch.

If Giants fans want to be upset with what happened, that's fine. But they probably should be more upset the Giants have gone 27-42 in the second half. Had they gone 34-35 they would have 91 wins, same as the Dodgers, and would have popped Champagne corks by now for reaching the postseason.

Spottie, Saturday, 1 October 2016 05:23 (eight years ago)

all the Giants need to do is win one more game and they are in right?

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 07:15 (eight years ago)

In what? If they go 1-1, they could be in a play-in game -- or two -- before the WC game.

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 October 2016 13:39 (eight years ago)

what i meant by in is, playing past Sunday. if the Giants just win out then that would be best and the other team will face Bumgarner.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 17:39 (eight years ago)

this season Baseball ending would have been boring without the Wild Card games.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 17:40 (eight years ago)

it really helps when the team you root for is in that mix.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 17:41 (eight years ago)

well you're going against kershaw today so

k3vin k., Saturday, 1 October 2016 17:44 (eight years ago)

the Giants do fine against Kershaw.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 20:24 (eight years ago)

i know record wise it might say something different but watching those games they are always right there outside i think one game this year.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 20:25 (eight years ago)

Go time

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 October 2016 20:25 (eight years ago)

lowest ERA at AT&T park of all time, but ok

k3vin k., Saturday, 1 October 2016 20:28 (eight years ago)

Enjoying Blach so far. Indeed, the first strikes are impressive. I nominate him to run 48 innings to another post-season glories, full of pinch hit HR and well timed wild pitches.

(A Bumgarner, Cueto, Shark, Moore, Blach rotation makes me confident right out of the gate for 2017)

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 1 October 2016 20:37 (eight years ago)

Ty Blach for the 2016 Cy Young afaic.
