How can Mr. Met get in trouble for giving someone the middle finger IF HE DOESN'T HAVE ONE 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 pic.twitter.com/0QZd2GxQyz

Moltar:
In your Insider piece today you talk about how Harvey still has the stuff to be successful, but no longer generates swings and misses. Is it reasonable to think that Harvey is still less than %100? If the Mets’ injury prevention program wasn’t a dumpster fire, would he have been better served starting the year on the DL and pitching a full compliment of rehab starts?

Jeff Sullivan:
Well, that’s impossible for us to know and be any kind of certain. My hunch is that Harvey had his delivery kind of screwed up when he made that emergency start against Atlanta, but that’s just uninformed speculation.

I have yet to do a real Harvey deep dive. But it’s instantly clear that his O-Swing even from last year has dropped 10 percentage points. That’s a problem with his secondary stuff, and not his fastball.
…which then becomes a problem for his fastball, since hitters can look for it.

Braves intentionally walk Conforto to load the bases for Cespedes, who promptly hits a grand slam. Welcome back!

Flores is 39 for his last 100. I've done the math. That equals .390. Since the start of May. Decent.

Starting pitching as advertised v Braves (assuming 5 scoreless innings is the max Harvey can give henceforth).

Series vs Cubs and Nats, need to go 4-3 at least.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:57 (seven years ago) link

@MarcCarig
Michael Conforto has back stiffness and was a scratch, per multiple reports from the ballpark. Flores is getting a day off.

@AlbaneseLaura
TC says Flores needed a day and today was ideal because he's struggled against Lackey and they've got a bunch of lefties coming up.

Even though Cespedes was removed due to the score, TC brought up tendinitis for him, which isn’t great. Manageable, but not perfect.

I just read the article about the Seaver trade in the Post ... if this happened today, would people see it differently? These days, if a team knows it can't contend this year or the next, they almost have to trade a star who's signed to a team friendly contract.

So I guess it's really about how Mets management treated their biggest ever star like shit, rather than the trade itself?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 16 June 2017 13:30 (seven years ago) link

He was The Franchise. It would be like the O's trading Cal Jr in his prime during a down season.

He was in the last year of his contract, right?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 June 2017 19:57 (seven years ago) link

Seaver signed a two year extension with a hometown discount instead of testing free agency. I guess you could point fingers at both sides there (Seaver for being naive, Mets management for taking advantage of him) but baseball fans as a whole were on the owners' side of the free agency issue, so Seaver was in a bad place, PR-wise, when his demands for a raise became public.

In the past decade, Johan Santana and Roy Halladay were franchise pitchers who were traded in their prime for players who never panned out. Of course they weren't inner circle HOF'ers like Seaver. But comparing these kinds of things across eras is (probably) pointless anyway -- every era needs to be considered within the context of its time.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 16 June 2017 20:21 (seven years ago) link

I had forgotten most of the money details. It wasn't exactly a hometown discount -- the multimillion signings (Wayne Garland being the first, as the Post article says) began just after TS signed his 3-year deal.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 June 2017 20:31 (seven years ago) link

how a hitter like Reyes homers off a pitcher like Scherzer is a mystery of baseball
