Zack Wheeler got the fingernail on his right middle finger caught on the zipper of his jeans and he might have to have the nail removed. If that happens, he'd seem to be a long shot to start Monday.

i don't want to be a dick -- pitchers do bizarre things with their bodies, almora ran into a wall, nimmo/davis/alonso/pillar were all hit by pitches and i begrudge none of it -- but it kinda seems like young professional athletes receiving state-of-the-art medical care should be straining fewer muscles

The public has long accepted the mantra of not always fielding the best possible team at all times, there is no risk in being overly cautious with assets.
― Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 17:50 (three years ago) link
sure, there's nothing wrong with being cautious. and you obviously can't run your catcher out there every day (unless you're mike matheney, who's had salvador perez catch 36 and DH 10 of the royals' 46 games).
but i also don't think the physical demands on michael conforto's body are all that great? he has to chase a handful of balls and run the bases maybe three times a game. yes, they play almost every day and travel and it's a grind, but also it's not really a contact sport. i don't mean to pick on conforto specifically -- shit happens -- but i feel like there are more players being sidelined for weeks at a time by strained muscles than seems strictly reasonable. be in better shape, you dang kids!

You might have a point with position players, outside of catchers.

what a loss. guess he'll be stuck on .142/.225/.434 for the season
New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson could be done for the rest of the season after an MRI revealed a high-grade strain to his right calf.Donaldson said the injury, evaluated by two doctors, was diagnosed as at least a Grade 2-plus right calf strain, and a possible Grade 3 strain -- high enough of a grade to be considered a tear.
