* Buehrle broke with baseball code by talking about the no-hitter in the dugout between innings.

* It was not the fastest perfect game on record. Mike Witt's (Sept. 30, 1984) and Tom Browning's (Sept. 16, 1988) were both over in less than two hours. Buehrle, though, apparently spent only 32 minute on the mound.

* Buehrle had the same home plate umpire that he did in his no-hitter in April 2007, Eric Cooper. He went 27-up, 27-down in that game since he picked off the only baserunner.

* Wise's saving catch came right in front of an outfield-wall mural which honours 1950s White Sox ace Billy Pierce. On June 27, 1958, Pierce lost a perfect game with two out in the ninth inning.

* Steve Rosenbloom at Rosenblog: "It’s not a matter of whether the Sox ever retire Buehrle’s number. It’s a question of whether it’s done by morning."

* Wise was in the opposing dugout for the previous perfecto, Randy Johnson's vs. the Atlanta Braves on May 18, 2004.

* White Sox catcher Ramon Castro had never caught Buehrle before. He's not the first to do so. Current Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell caught one of Nolan Ryan's no-hitters the first time he caught him.

"If I see someone hit my player, and I know they hit him on purpose, it's two guys going down. I don't care if I get suspended. I rather have me suspended for two games than have my players on the DL for 30 days."

i am amazing myself by coming around on the thought that there's probably a method to ozzie's madness. also, i don't like to agree with jay mariotti.

Andy K, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 00:34 (fourteen years ago) link

why shouldn't it count as an earned run when the error is made by the pitcher?
baseball is stupid.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Contraras is such a gutless loser. I NEVER want to see him in a White Sox uniform ever again.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:40 (fourteen years ago) link

ContrEras. Also, it should be noted that after his ridiculous shit show, Carrasco came in and got Drew out on ONE PITCH.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

It doesn't count as an "earned run" when the Pitcher makes A FIELDING ERROR, that's just frickin common sense. A FIELDING ERROR, has nothing to do with the pitcher's performance PITCHING, whether the error is made by the pitcher or the left-fielder. Jesus, watch what you accuse of being stupid....

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

easy.

sorry, TT, got a lil riled up over Contreras's PUTRID performance. no ill will, my friend, caught me at a bad moment. And, frankly, I take back my ire toward Jose. It's not HIS fault that they trot him out there every fifth day. What's he gonna do, say, "Sorry, Kenny, I have nothing left. I was done last year, no idea why you guys keep me on the payroll. I will not take the ball on Monday against the Red Sox."

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 04:49 (fourteen years ago) link

So Peavy presumably takes Contreras' place. (LOL at career minor leaguer scowling at Peavy for inside pitch last night, btw.)

The Sox aren't expecting much out of Garcia, are they?

<3 ozzie:

What have I seen from Rios? A lot of outs. The only batting ninth guy making $5 million was me. This motherf——- is making $10, $12, $14 million, he ain't going to be batting ninth. I'm going to make sure he earns his money. But right now I have to put him there because he's struggling. Next year, if we have Rios batting ninth we're in deep shit, once again.

two weeks pass...

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091012&content_id=7440078

Jenks is not a happy man, and it has nothing to do with another offseason beginning with trade rumors. Instead, during a weekend chat with MLB.com, Jenks took umbrage with the White Sox once again calling out his conditioning at the end of the 2009 season.

"I've done everything I can do, I've done everything that is physically possible, to make myself in better shape this year," said Jenks. "Where the years previously I didn't lose weight in-season, I didn't want my weight issue to be a factor as to why I had an off season."

...

"Obviously, this kid has to show up in shape," Guillen said. "That's his problem every winter. Hopefully, he knows about it. That's his career and that's the way he's going to make money, if he takes care of himself a little bit in the winter."

Guillen is not the only one in the organization who feels this way. He relayed comments from White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who in a brief address to the team said that if the players didn't want to prepare themselves for next year, let the team know and something will be done about it.

"For four years now, I've been the same guy, and when I slow down a little ..." Jenks said. "Bad things happen to anyone, not because I need to get into shape. This has been me the whole time, so where is the problem?"
