You could have made a fortune on the baseball card stock market investing in and then 3 months later selling off all your jefferies cards.

To state the obvious, it really does put a lot of pressure on someone. Mike Schmidt hit .200 for two seasons without, I'm guessing, drawing a lot of attention. Robin Yount was pretty ordinary for three or four seasons. (As someone who's all over Vlad all the time, I'm being hypocritical.)

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:27 (two months ago) link

I see a parallel between that and the pressure for new-release films to make huge amounts of money immediately.

In more recent times, Joe Mauer was touted as THE REAL DEAL (USA Today HS-POY for both football and baseball but NOT for basketball), iirc he only struck out in one AB in his 4 year HS career, was drafted straight out of HS as #1 pick 2001 and is heading to Cooperstown.

Mauer averaged more than 20 points a game as a point guard for Cretin-Derham Hall.[9] He was also named to the All-State team during his final two years on Cretin-Derham's basketball team.[12]

What an utter disappointment... sheesh.

I honestly think Matt Wieters mania was bigger, at least in Orioles world, than the pre-debut hype around Holliday, Grayson Rodriguez, or Gunnar, with only Rutschman maybe comparable

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 11 April 2024 02:05 (two months ago) link

i was working for milb dot com when wieters came up and it was (insofar as anything involving minor league baseball can be) huge

in my memory, only harper was a bigger deal

could have been you, joey bart

Orioles thread, I know--last mention I'll make of this. I vaguely recall that Bob Horner arrived with a lot of fanfare too:

Horner was drafted by Atlanta with the first overall pick in the 1978 amateur draft, and he made his Major League Baseball debut the same year. He is one of only a handful of players to go directly from college to the starting lineup in the majors without spending a day in the minor leagues. In his first game, he belted a home run off future Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven of the Pirates.

I went to tuesday and wednesday's sox/orioles games, and yesterday I was seated next to a big orioles fan who flew from baltimore on a moment's notice when he learned jackson holliday had been called up. was pretty cool to be able to see his first game -- hopefully he'll end up being a legend and I can say I was there

I like that Tony Kemp tweet that's circulating:

In the fall of 2010, our college had a series against the Longhorns for a 3 game set. Our hitting coach at the time was Josh Holliday and his brother, Matt, brought his kid to our early practice. I remember watching his son @J_Holliday7 with a sweet lefty swing. Go get em’ kid!

— Tony Kemp (@tonykemp) April 10, 2024

Seems like a guy you'd want on your team.

clemenza, Friday, 12 April 2024 17:59 (two months ago) link

(They had to release Kemp to make room for Holliday.)

clemenza, Friday, 12 April 2024 17:59 (two months ago) link

kemp is a fantastic guy

saw some comment about Henderson's high school and looked it up - I guess the movement to rename certain institutions hasn't caught on everywhere...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_T._Morgan_Academy

When I was a teen, we used to do those separately. 2nd screen culture has gone too far

H.P, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 00:40 (two months ago) link

Holliday still struggling. Read that his 1-30 start is the worst through 9 games since Gary Disarcina in 1990. (Lifetime Angel...hmmmm, I can make use of that information.)

clemenza, Monday, 22 April 2024 21:52 (two months ago) link

As truly dreadful as his .033/.094/.033 (.127 OPS) is... it's really the 2BB:16K that's more concerning (should note it was 1BB:15K before yesterday).

He was 138BB:138K for his MiLB career (12BB:8K this year).

Albert Suarez, huh. No MLB appearances since 2017 and 11 scoreless innings in two starts.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 23 April 2024 04:33 (two months ago) link

definitely curious to see if opposing hitters catch up to suarez. his stuff looks legit to my untrained eyes.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 23 April 2024 14:37 (two months ago) link

Suarez is surely the Jim Traber of 2024 but I'm enjoying this for as long as it lasts

That is a surprise. Happened with Delgado and Halladay and no doubt many others who came back fine. Hopefully his confidence not too shaken.

clemenza, Friday, 26 April 2024 17:38 (two months ago) link

heck, cowser came up before the asb last year, got sent back down in august and that was that until spring training. seems okay, too.

j.q higgins, Friday, 26 April 2024 17:59 (two months ago) link

One impressive stat is he somehow scored 5 runs despite only 2 BBs & 2 singles.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Friday, 26 April 2024 18:00 (two months ago) link

...and 1 HBP. I guess you could say he's very productive once he gets on base.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Friday, 26 April 2024 18:02 (two months ago) link

Henderson's HR last night makes him the the youngest player ever to hit 10 before May 1st.

clemenza, Tuesday, 30 April 2024 19:04 (one month ago) link

Feel like that's a tricky stat as opening day began around April 22 then over time shifted to the second Saturday in April and now in 2024 we had games played on March 28.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 30 April 2024 19:16 (one month ago) link

...but still impressive!

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 30 April 2024 19:16 (one month ago) link

Still surprised in that he's 22, and there have been a number of Griffey- and Matthews-type players who were already regulars at 19 or 20 (another: Giancarlo Stanton). I would have thought one of them would have done that.

also curious to see how bradish is used going forward.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 2 May 2024 15:10 (one month ago) link

feel like this sort of thing is maybe more common these days, but everyone in the o's starting infield today is a former shortstop.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 2 May 2024 17:13 (one month ago) link

Feel like the A's did that in the Moneyball era (at least moving SSs to 2B/3B)? I know the A's were also starting 3x CFs in their outfield for a while when CFs were undervalued.

lol. o's need a francis winterbottom or somesuch.

j.q higgins, Saturday, 4 May 2024 19:43 (one month ago) link

I was one of those doomers who thought last year was our best chance to win, but I thought the rest of the AL East would be better this year than they've been, and I didn't think we were going to change ownership and sign a guy like Burnes.
