A lefty named Pomeranz is listed in the Giants bullpen on the lineup card today. Ummm.....— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) May 24, 2024

Ok? He hasn’t pitched in like three years
OK, Giants announced it: Drew Pomeranz, who was released by Dodgers earlier today, has signed a one-year contract. Mason Black optioned, Jakson Reetz DFAd.— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) May 24, 2024

As per my earlier c0n5p1r@cy t430ry: Riley will miss his 11th straight game today but took BP and fielding drills.

xps i have no insight into the pirates and rowdy, apart from having seen fans complain about his suckiness
if someone needs a 1B, however, it is a complete mystery why brandon belt (.254/.369/.490, 19 HR, 138 wRC+ last year) remains unsigned

Braves following an 18-6 month with an 11-14 month is fucking with my head and making me see things that may not be there, including "something is bad wrong with Acuña." I need to back off from following them day to day and just watch more movies or something...
― Ippei's on a bummer now (WmC), Sunday, 26 May 2024 14:04 (five months ago) link
Yeah something is up. Of course, losing your SP1 Strider for the year (and some of next), and then Murphy and Riley getting hurt is not optimal, but Acuna, Harris, Albies & Olson have all had lukewarm to ice cold starts to the year. Ozuna is the only one who really seems to be showing up and clocking in. Sale is pitching as well/better than he ever has and Fried seems to have turned a corner.
― Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 26 May 2024 15:29 (five months ago) link
I thought Murphy might be a big factor (he's on my fantasy team and taking forever to return), but d'Arnaud's actually playing very well.

lotta teams having to travel tonight then play day games tomorrow, most notably the giants, who have to fly home from new york

Didn't realize what a brutal season Corbin Carroll is having:
.188/.274/.284, 62 OPS+, -0.1 bWAR
Lots of ROYs take a step or two back their sophmore year, but that's got to be historic. Obviously lots of time left to climb back to at least an okay season.
― clemenza, Monday, 27 May 2024 16:43 (five months ago) link
Trying to search that, but all I can find are 10 worst ROY seasons or 10 worst careers for ROYs, nothing about follow-up seasons.
Found at least one without too much trouble--unlike Carroll, I don't think anybody thought he had an especially brilliant career in store (and he won in a strike season): Bob Hamelin's 1995 season, .168/.278/.313.
― clemenza, Monday, 27 May 2024 16:50 (five months ago) link
he has a BABIP of .229 which is pretty brutal but he's only hit 2 HRs so maybe he's just not hitting the ball hard much at all, could be some sort of nagging injury maybe

13 year old article, but fairly comprehensive:

― Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Monday, 27 May 2024 16:53 (five months ago) link
Perfect, thanks...Don't think any of those guys were as highly regarded as Carroll; a lot of one-dimensional sluggers, singles-hitters, and glove guys. (I put pitchers in a separate category altogether.)

Willie McCovey won NL ROTY in 1959 & spent part of the second season in triple A. He still managed an OPS+ of 128, though!Possible Carroll is injured, but the team isn’t exactly setting the world alight by rubbing him out atm if he is. He’s 23, he’s got a lot of time and he’s so toolsy he’s got a decent floor.
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:10 (five months ago) link
Yeah him struggling with fastballs this season (per Hazen in that article) seems to be the main culprit. He’s got great bat speed and he’s got decent plate discipline so it’s probably just a case of adjusting again.https://i.postimg.cc/cC3ksFkm/IMG-1262.jpg

Being the manager of Corbin Carroll in the ilb fantasy league this season has been extremely disappointing. Last year I was aiming for Gunnar Henderson and he was snatched up one pick before me but ultimately last season CC was a really incredible consolation prize. However I should know by now, whenever prognosticators are enthusing about players guaranteed to escalate to yet another level like many were suggesting re: him, it's basically a curse. I also saw more than one guy writing about Acuna being the first 50/50 guy in 2024...
