(Josh) Gibson is MLB’s new all-time career leader in batting average (.372, moving ahead of Ty Cobb), slugging percentage (.718, moving ahead of Ruth), OPS (1.177, ahead of Ruth), and holds the all-time single season records in each of those categories.

Now that these available new statistics validate Gibson’s greatness, Sean Gibson is hoping that the Baseball Writers Association names the league’s Most Valuable Player Awards in Gibson’s honor.

The MVP award used to be named after former MLB commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, but his name was stripped off the plaque in 2020 after former MVP winners Barry Larkin, Terry Pendleton and Mike Schmidt voiced their discomfort. Landis was MLB’s first commissioner from 1920 to 1944 and baseball was not integrated until three years after his death.

That's a great idea. (Sean is Josh's great-grandson.) I grew up thinking Landis was a hero because of the White Sox scandal and didn't know anything about his mission to keep the game segrated. (Should have been able to figure that out myself past the age of about 15.) His role in coming down hard on gambling--which was in danger of killing the sport--was huge and shouldn't be forgotten. But the other is unforgiveable.

segrated = segregated

how long to Angel H.'s podcast?

Ippei's on a bummer now (WmC), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 17:27 (five months ago) link

tbh i'm not sure mlb *can* force angel out, due to the umpires union (and the fact that, as defector recently pointed out, he's not actually the worst umpire). they could maybe deny him plum assignments, but given his seniority that would probably just end up in court again

if mlb approached him, it was probably to point out 'you're 62, you've been in the majors for 25 years, and everybody hates you. how long do you really want to keep doing this?'

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:38 (five months ago) link

also probably nagl to be seen as "forcing out" someone who sued you for racial discrimination

na (NA), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 19:34 (five months ago) link

While Angel may not have been consistently the worst, he possessed this sort of high-leverage shittiness where the more was at-stake, the higher propensity he'd make the wrong call.

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 20:04 (five months ago) link

the timing of this is the oddest thing. why not wait til the season is over? makes me feel like mlb had something on angel

it looks like the nats may have made out really well in the soto trade in the end

mackenzie gore has been awesome as of late and is now just putting up a great season -- both his ERA and FIP are under 3.00 and he's eighth among qualified SP in K/9 after mowing down the braves line up last night

cj abrams is on pace to put up a 3-4 WAR season after being a 2+ WAR player last year

and james wood is one of the 5 or 10 best prospects in the game

prospect guys think robert hassell looks like a bust now, but still even abrams and gore if they keep progressing at this rate would prob put them over the median return for this kinda trade let alone w/ wood waiting in the wings

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 May 2024 17:56 (five months ago) link

Yep Abrams still needs work with the glove but he’s looking every bit like the kind of core piece you build a team around. Gore great as you said.

I like Bobby Witt Jr. but why does he have the same haircut as Butthead

na (NA), Saturday, 1 June 2024 01:56 (five months ago) link

I wonder if it's still possible to win an MVP on narrative and the hoariest of old-school stats, RBI? Jose Ramirez is leading the Guardians in WAR with 2.3, but he's not anywhere near Tucker or Witt or Henderson or the other leaders--he's not in the Top 10. But he's got the other two covered: respected team leader on a semi-surprising division leader, possible (edging towards probable) HOF'er who's a Top 10 MVP perennial (six out of seven years and counting) who's never won one, and, with 57 RBI in 58 games, he's got a decent chance to knock in 150. If this were 1977, he might be the favourite; probably headed for another 4th- or 5th-place finish.

San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is facing a potential lifetime ban for betting on baseball, sources tell ESPN.

While Major League Baseball's investigation into Marcano is not complete, a penalty, as @lindseyadler and @jareddiamond reported, could be imminent.

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) June 3, 2024

I think the Padres will survive, but it might be interesting if they’re actively investigating players atm

Who's your LOOGY?

― Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Thursday, May 23, 2024 5:19 AM bookmarkflaglink

Delayed reaction: I tried very hard to cast my mind back to the days of this endangered species, even reading this article on the LOOGY Hall of Fame and came up with little more than Mike Remlinger.

On May 25, 2005, Mike Remlinger was placed on the 15-day Disabled List by the Chicago Cubs after breaking his left pinkie by getting it caught in a chair. At the time Remlinger was pitching quite poorly and many speculated the injury was a way of clearing roster space without putting Remlinger on waivers. Steve Stone, a baseball analyst and former Cubs broadcaster, often refers to having players "sit in the Remlinger chair" when they are playing badly during a season.

So put me in the Remlinger chair if you don't like it.

MIKE MYERS was a LOOGY

never got anywhere near an inning per appearance; allowed a career .301/.400/.478 with 32 IBB against righties (!), .219/.304/.332 and 1 IBB against lefties

won a title with the 2004 red sox but didn't pitch in the world series after getting shelled in the ALDS and ALCS

played for nine different teams but somehow was never a pirate

mookieproof, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 00:11 (five months ago) link

Mike Myers, the Pride of Crystal Lake High School, a first-ballot LOOGY Hall of Famer.

Who's this though

They’ll be our first inductees in the prestigious LOOGY Hall of Fame. And they’ll no doubt be as proud of that honor as they are of that time they once whiffed Barry Bonds with a 73-mile-per-hour frisbee with the bases jammed.

Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life for violating MLB's gambling policy, MLB announced.

Padres’ Jay Groome, Phillies’ José Rodríguez, Diamondbacks’ Andrew Saalfrank and the Athletics’ Michael Kelly have all been suspended one year for betting.

— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) June 4, 2024

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 14:54 (five months ago) link

Tucupita Marcano placed 231 MLB bets, including 25 bets on the Pirates when he was on the Injured List. He lost all of his parlays involving the Pirates and won only 4.3 percent of his MLB bets.

Andrew Saalfrank bet $445.87 on baseball, with $444.07 of that on MLB-related bets…

— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) June 4, 2024

, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 17:07 (five months ago) link

Andrew Saalfrank bet $445.87 on baseball, with $444.07 of that on MLB-related bets (an average of approximately $15.86 per bet) and with a net loss of $272.64 on MLB bets. Saalfrank only won five of his 28 MLB-related bets and lost his $1.80 college bet.

Michael Kelly bet $99.22 on MLB games (an average of $9.92 per bet). Kelly won only five of the MLB game bets and had a net win of $28.30 on the bets.

Jay Groome bet $453.74 on 30 MLB game-related bets (an average of approximately $15.12 per bet) and had a net loss of $433.54 on these bets.

José Rodríguez bet $749.09 on baseball, with $724.09 of that on MLB-related bets.

i get that manfred wants to show a zero tolerance policy towards baseball betting but how about just not legalizing betting at all lol

The Ohtani story is a closed book, right? I ask because, when I met a friend last week--a casual fan at best, but someone who's aware of bigger baseball stories--I was surprised when he was surprised that I believed the resolution; he still took it for granted that Ohtani was lying. Has the public in general moved on?

Obviously, this is sure to open it all up again.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 17:11 (five months ago) link

someone on this board has a pet theory that Ohtani's current slump is due to the gambling news (esp. his "best friend" Fletcher) popping up again.

my theory is that Ohtani is injured, a tweaked hammy?

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 17:23 (five months ago) link

I just can't believe that any player caught betting on MLB games isn't banned for life. Genuinely thought that was the expected punishment

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 17:32 (five months ago) link

Maybe it’s because it’s clear their insider knowledge wasn’t benefiting them? There must be details on why somewhere.
