After yesterday's start, Skenes has a K/BB ratio of 53/7. How often do you see that with a 22-year-old starter? Going back to Jose Fernandez, his was 4.21 for his four seasons, and that was really impressive; Skenes is at 7.57.

Do we have the ILB equivalent of the "the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually still alive" thread, except "still playing"? Had no idea Dallas Keuchel was pitching for a Triple-A team right now (or that he pitched for the Twins last year).

Rockies - Dodgers. Absolutely BONKERS 9th inning. Score line doesn't do it justice.

― frogbs, Wednesday, 19 June 2024 04:15 (four months ago) link
I'm sure I'll surprise no one here by stating..... I actually thought the check swing was borderline. In a perfect world, probably should have gone to the Rockies, but calling it in the moment I don't think it was egregious by the umpire (RF Jake cave would disagree with me here). The call on Smith beforehand kinda balanced it out anyways.
The luckier element of that inning was the JayHey grandie staying fair. Off the foul pole to keep the dodgers in the game. That hit still only took the dodgers from .5% to a 8.7% chance of winning (which went back to 7.8% after the questionable Smith strike out). Absolute monster inning, prime television.

Brewers/Angels had an insane finish too, Angels nearly came back down 6 in the 9th but Sal Frelick caught what would've been the game tying homerun
― frogbs, Wednesday, 19 June 2024 04:29 (four months ago) link
We were at our local microbrewery for trivia night and the place exploded with that Jason Heyward grand slam. Then again utter pandemonium with Teoscar's homerun. I am so not a Dodger homer but it's fun seeing a game in that setting.
― felicity, Wednesday, 19 June 2024 04:47 (four months ago) link
Xp wow just watched. Centimetre from tieing it.
Does sound fun. It was utter pandemonium, alone, at my place. Scared the cat off the couch. The grin didn't leave my face after the Hayward homer; just knew how it was going to end from that moment.

The Giants and Cardinals will get an extra position player for Thursday’s game at Rickwood, and like a doubleheader, they can call up a player without burning an option. The Giants appealed to the league to let them activate LaMonte Wade Jr. from the IL for a day and were denied.— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) June 18, 2024

checking the score of mets/cubs and saw that diekman saved the game. huh that’s funny i thought. found out later that diaz had been tossed before throwing a single pitch for sticky stuff. wtf? makes no sense.
10 games is rough for a starter but trebly rough for a closer. then again we’ve been without him due to il/rehab for a while so…

KWAN-WATCH!
i didn't know either - i suppose because he only has 49 games, 222 PAs - will he qualify for the batting title if he stays healthy?
― z_tbd, Monday, 24 June 2024 17:13 (four months ago) link
probably - you need 502 PAs i think

― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 June 2024 17:29 (four months ago) link
You need 500 ABs to qualify for the batting title and he’s got 222. He hits leadoff so you’d expect him to get to 500 if healthy.
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 24 June 2024 17:33 (four months ago) link
Sorry, plate appearances, not ABs!
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 24 June 2024 17:34 (four months ago) link
Just to get annoyingly technical (unless this has changed), it was always 3.1 PA per team game played--so if your team lost a couple of games to weather, your floor would drop accordingly. And if they add an 0-for-however-many-PA-you're-short and you still have the highest BA, you win.
― clemenza, Monday, 24 June 2024 18:04 (four months ago) link
"You're right--that's annoyingly technical."

AL first base is not a great position right now--there was a time when that was filled with MVP candidates.

Naylor for me in the absence of better (but less healthy) candidates. Though his season hasn’t lived up to his 2023 yet. Kyle Tucker is injured btw.
