Not that anything needs to be said about it HINT HINT.

David R., Saturday, 12 April 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

good job

deeznuts, Saturday, 12 April 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

Renteria really sucks.

David R., Saturday, 12 April 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

Ryan Dempster has been shockingly effective in his two starts. 13 IP, 4 hits, 4 BB, 2R (1 ER), 10 K. Kudos.

felicity, Saturday, 12 April 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

not really shocked cuz dempster showed #3-type stuff in relief last year, mixing in a lot of above avg pitches but nothing super-special; having him in the bp was kind of confounding to me. havent seen him yet this year but my guess is that he'll be a quality starter

deeznuts, Saturday, 12 April 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah the shock is from years of mis-having him as a closer.

felicity, Saturday, 12 April 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

edgar "i stretch a lot in the batters box" renteria provided half their offense!

Kyle Lo(h)se deserves a place here

bnw, Saturday, 12 April 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

Cain just dingered.

Leee, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

And has 6 no-hit innings.

Leee, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

it is now 6.2 3-hit innings.

can add Looper to the list of ex-closers doing wtf well as a starter.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 12 April 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

LEE YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SAY ANYTHING WHICH IS THE POINT OF THE THREAD HINT HINT

David R., Sunday, 13 April 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

Off-topic but on-topic in the "taking thread title literally" sense: SCOTT OLSEN (!?!?!?)

Not surprising: Jair Mothjerrfjuckjing Jurrjens. What is surprising, though, is his 7.46 K/9.

Andy K, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, after yesterday's start I grabbed him in the fantasy league. He looked good in an "I don't give a fuck about ANY of these chumps" way.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

Ponson wtf.

Andy K, Thursday, 1 May 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

every year there's always one or two dudes like this guy was in '00:

two weeks pass...

Jon Lester is pitching really well so far today.

mattbot, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

: D

omar little, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

Man I sure picked the right meaningless Royals game to go to. Never thought I'd see a no-hitter.

govern yourself accordingly, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

well they are often worse pitched than some one or two hit games.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

well, you know, it takes a tremendous amount of luck to achieve a one or two hitter.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

they are often worse pitched than three or four hitters.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

haha, fuck you :)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

(METS HAVE DONE FINE W/OUT ONE IN 46 YEARS)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

best pitched game i ever saw live was when pedro struck out 15 and lost. to tampa. completely wtf.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

excuse me, retrosheet.org tells me he struck out 17 and lost.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

PITCHING

Tampa Bay Devil Rays IP H R ER BB SO HR
Trachsel W(2-2) 9 3 0 0 3 11 0

Boston Red Sox IP H R ER BB SO HR
P. Martinez L(5-1) 9 6 1 1 1 17 0

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

but Trachsel pitched better! HE GAVE UP HALF AS MANY HITS!

anyone see WGN rerun the 9th of Jim Maloney's no hitter vs the Cubs in '65, a few weeks ago during a rain delay? The guy walked TEN and threw something like 190 pitches!

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Back when the game was played by MEN

Andy K, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

pretty sure while w/ montreal pedro threw 9 perfect innings & ended up losing

deeznuts, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

that's not too impressive, a lot of bad luck involved there.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

xp to Andy: MEN whose arms were dead at 31!

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

so what? all the hitters were either boozed up or hungover. EVEN PLAYING FIELD.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

xp to Andy: MEN whose arms were dead at 31!

Back then, you didn't know whether you'd HAVE your throwing arm the next day -- lost to the combine out on the back forty, or combat, or what have you. You just threw like hell, left everything out there on the mound.

Andy K, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

I once left my watch out on the mound, but that was not on purpose.

G00blar, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

daniel cabrera, the consecutive reigning AL walks champion, pitched his third game WITHOUT issuing a walk this season last night. his three-peat is in peril as he has now tumbled out of the top ten on the heels of his 8th straight quality start.

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

Following Daver's stinging rebukes, I'd like to known if it's now OK to say that Lester pitched a NH.

Leee, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

Dana Eveland is pitching very nicely.

i saw andrew miller strike out 9 the other night, but i originally thought it was 13 or so, so i couldn't even imagine seeing 17

joe saunders is 8-1 w/ a 2.31 era right now

deeznuts, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it's all part of what they call . . . gowring up.

felicity, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

If the modification that I suggested doesn't count as an acceptable dodge, then I agree with Scully. But I remember lots of announcers using those exact words who seemed to be under the impression they'd honoured the taboo.

clemenza, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:04 (one month ago)

I think the superstition comes from the fact that it can actually be hard to talk about things that haven’t happened yet. You don’t want to deaden the moment by being being all “He’s only seven outs away! Another out! Now there’s only six to go! It sure is gonna be great when he finishes that no hitter!!!”

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:10 (one month ago)

Can't be wrong if you're silent (but you can be bad at your job)

H.P, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:12 (one month ago)

Whoever started this thread clearly believed in the superstition.

clemenza, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:13 (one month ago)

You don’t want to deaden the moment by being being all “He’s only seven outs away!

lol that is utterly ridiculous (and lock thread, i guess, because we don't want to deaden any further moments after having done so for 17 years)

mookieproof, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:17 (one month ago)

I was talking about for an announcer

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:20 (one month ago)

By overhyping something. I was speculating that maybe that’s where the superstition came from?

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:21 (one month ago)

I was accused of jinxing the Angels-Rays game yesterday by commenting on the fact that Caminero had 28 home runs and then he proceeded to hit two more

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:25 (one month ago)

Kershaw 28 outs away from a perfect game right now; incredible

H.P, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:36 (one month ago)

I was talking about for an announcer

i know! an announcer mentioning that a guy has thrown six no-hit innings is not 'deadening the moment' unless the announcer utterly drives it into the ground with every subsequent pitch (which has never happened)

also who exactly accused you of jinxing an angels-rays game, because the interested parties might very well include Satan?

mookieproof, Friday, 8 August 2025 02:59 (one month ago)

My friend, it was a joke.

For the third time, I was speculating about where the superstition may have come from.

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 03:42 (one month ago)

I think announcers do overhype things sometimes. It’s a line they have to tread.

timellison, Friday, 8 August 2025 03:43 (one month ago)

I remember Jon Miller announcing during a perfect game in progress and he said something like "...and it's rather astonishing he has yet to allow a baserunner this game!"

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Friday, 8 August 2025 04:36 (one month ago)

Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement began tonight's Jays-Dodgers game by striking out on three pitches each. Dan Schulman: "And Snell is two-thirds of the way towards an Immaculate Inning." Next pitch, Guerrero up, ball.

You see? Even in small sample sizes, you shouldn't fuck around with tradition.

JoeStork, Sunday, 7 September 2025 02:12 (two weeks ago)

You just gotta laugh.

Yoshi finally gets run support (3 runs!!!!), throws 8.2ip no hit ball, gets hit with the loss. It's kind of beautiful in a way

H.P, Sunday, 7 September 2025 02:13 (two weeks ago)

first time that's every happened apparently.. ahead in a no hitter w one out to go -> loss

Glasnow 7 no hit innings, 11ks. 1-1 game (walk, steal, groundout to third, sac fly). Dodgers haters might wanna tune into this, see how the Dodgers blow a no-no again

H.P, Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:12 (one week ago)

Blake Treinen has just brought a no hitter into the 9th inning lol. Put Tanner Scott in!!!!!!!!

H.P, Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:26 (one week ago)

Dave's actually putting Tanner in for the 9th, going for the funniest outcome possible. No-no redemption arc!!!!!!

H.P, Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:30 (one week ago)

well

H.P, Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:36 (one week ago)

Amazing

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:40 (one week ago)

I guess coughing up 3 runs would have been much more hilarious. The one hit just kind of sucks for Glasnow

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 9 September 2025 04:42 (one week ago)

Okay I'm way way way too early here, but Emmett Sheehan has thrown 4 perfect innings and it would just be so good to do this whole rodeo three times in four days

H.P, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 03:00 (one week ago)

Hunter Greene just pitched a one hit complete game shutout vs. the Cubes

frogbs, Friday, 19 September 2025 01:17 (two days ago)

I didn’t realize how cold Suzuki had gone along with everyone else, at the ASB he was looking like a possible bet for 40/120 on the season.

omar little, Friday, 19 September 2025 18:26 (two days ago)

Yeah that whole Cubs OF has gone to shit: Tucker out for the season/year, Suzuki is ice cold, PCA is batting 8th (EIGHTH!)...

They looked ready to take the pennant around the ASB

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Friday, 19 September 2025 23:52 (two days ago)

PCA has like a 40% chase rate, he was never going to sustain that production tbf.
