obviously you are not down with your latino brothers
http://www.dailynews.com/sports/20131015/how-the-los-angeles-dodgers-became-known-as-los-doyers
“Doyers” means nothing in Spanish, but it means a lot to Garcia, and generations of Latino Dodgers fans. “Doyers” has become a nostalgic phenomena in the Los Angeles Latino community, as more and more Mexican-Americans become assimilated and lose their accents. Previous generations of Central American immigrants struggled to say “Dodgers” so it came out sounding like “Doyers.” “My parents, my uncles, they all say ‘Doyers,’” Garcia said. “My brother and I are the first Mexican-Americans in the family, and we say ‘Dodgers.’ My 5-year-old son here, he says ‘Dodgers.’”

The general area, the city (of Philadelphia) being blue-collar, it’s not conducive for a superstar. You can be good, but you’ve got to be blue-collar along the way, keep your mouth shut, just go and work. Where obviously, this is L.A. It’s almost like it’s OK to be more flamboyant. You kind of appreciate that the more you’re out there. Because L.A. loves a star.

what do u expect from hector olivera this year, where will the dodgers put him?
Klaw (3:20 PM)I think 3b this year if his elbow checks out, then 2b next year after Kendrick leaves. That lets Seager slide to third. Also I expect Olivera to be good for 20 or so homers and a decent average, but I have no idea what kind of OBP or even approach he'll have.

Greinke's 1.39 ERA is the lowest since Gibson in '68, and therefore the second lowest since Walter Johnson in 1915. Yes, besides his park advantage, he must also be getting a little lucky--his FIP is 2.65, very good but not spectacular (and higher than Kershaw's).
Anyway, keeping an ERA that low seems extremely unlikely. Even harder than staying in the vicinity of .400, I'd say (if you can get there in the first place, that is). You can have a couple of 0-fers chasing .400 and recover; get really shelled once, though, and your ERA won't recover for weeks, if at all.
― clemenza, Friday, 10 July 2015 15:59 (ten years ago)
Not a believer in FIP. There are pitchers who give up more singles, doubles, and triples than others because of the way they pitch and not just because of the defense behind them. Greinke is having an insane year and his WHIP if 0.843.
― timellison, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:29 (ten years ago)
his WHIP IS 0.843.
how about DRA?

It looks very interesting! I'd never read about it before.
― timellison, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:45 (ten years ago)
Took me a while to warm to FIP/BABIP, Tim, but I've come to accept their predictive value. I wouldn't use them in connection to awards, where a hit is a hit and a run is a run, but as a GM, I'd definitely pay attention to them when weighing free-agent signings.
Not trying to take anything away from Greinke's remarkable season, though.
― clemenza, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:47 (ten years ago)
Or to put it another way, compiling an ERA that low would almost by definition involve a little luck--even Gibson in '68 had an FIP more than half-a-run greater than his actual ERA. Ditto Gooden in '85 and Maddux in '94.
On the other hand, Gooden in '84 and Pedro in '99 had FIPs much lower than their impressive-enough-already ERAs. So the point is...I don't know what the point is.
― clemenza, Friday, 10 July 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)
How does J.P. Howell have a 0.30 ERA? He's given up 25 hits and 10 BB in 30 innings, with a good but not exceptional strikeout rate (no homers, mind you). Does he let a lot of inherited runners score?

― clemenza, Saturday, 8 August 2015 22:38 (ten years ago)
If you get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, they don't take away the hit. This should fall on the baserunner: single for the batter, assist to Puig, out made by the runner.

Corey Seager has hit .426/.526/.617 since being bumped to the majors, but his team is still leaning towards starting Jimmy Rollins over him once the veteran is healthy enough to return to the lineup.
Mattingly has hemmed and hawed, shifted and deflected. Now there are more we'll-sees than definitive statements either way. Possibly because he doesn't want it to be a distraction. Possibly because he can't respond with, "Jimmy Rollins is a decomposing mummy and Corey Seager is an erupting volcano of molten baseball talent. What do you think I'm going to do, jerk?"
