johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2015 15:16 (nine years ago)

#Yankees just put out a statement saying Sabathia is going into alcohol rehab and will not be available to the team in postseason

johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2015 17:08 (nine years ago)

good luck to him

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 October 2015 17:11 (nine years ago)

were they going to have him start any games? seems like odd timing, but probably serious enough to stop me from casting aspersions

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 5 October 2015 17:17 (nine years ago)

well, not if they wanted to win

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 October 2015 17:28 (nine years ago)

I think they prob had hopes of like a 5-7 inn'g damage control and turn it over to the pen start; he'd been pitching @ least serviceable recently

johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2015 17:30 (nine years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 00:01 (nine years ago)

fuck, just missed the poll. Going for my (kinda) hometown Astros!

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 01:41 (nine years ago)

how many hometowns do you have?!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 01:45 (nine years ago)

neither, go KC. was late anyways.

i guess!

didn't realize keuchel is going off of 3 days rest for this one (first time in his career)

1998 ball boy (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:12 (nine years ago)

threw 99 pitches in 21-5 game

smdh

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:13 (nine years ago)

i didn't really pay attention to that at the time because i didn't realize it would have any bearing on his readiness for this game, but wtf?!

1998 ball boy (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:17 (nine years ago)

SHIT

Andy K, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:26 (nine years ago)

He really only pitched one extra inning, what looks to be an uneventful 14-pitch top of the 6th; obviously he was going to pitch five, and 11 of the runs were scored after he left the game.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI201510020.shtml

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:34 (nine years ago)

but...why would he be sent out to pitch the bottom of the 6th, his team already ahead 10-2 at that point? if some sort of Quality Start record was involved i am going to barf

1998 ball boy (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:40 (nine years ago)

One inning too many, agreed--21-5 is a little misleading, though. I can only guess they had half-an-eye on the Cy Young, although even there, I think he'd clinched it the start before.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:42 (nine years ago)

I think the more scrubs in the lineup the better the Yanks chances of winning as they historically seem get a bunch of dumb luck hits and games out of last dudes on their bench. Small sample size or what but Beltran has been pretty darn good playoff player over his career too.

I think Houston seems a bit better club at this point but pretty even. In a one game playoff it's all or nothing. I'd think they would have better luck against KC than the Yanks as they got a bit deeper bullpen than NY.

earlnash, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:52 (nine years ago)

literally forgot oakland was in the wc last yr til that montage

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 23:40 (nine years ago)

Post-season won't be better than Chris Archer in a suit being an analyst. Peak reached.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:09 (nine years ago)

haha, i had the same thought. love that guy

1998 ball boy (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 00:17 (nine years ago)

i was putting the dinner dishes away, who's the pitcher who et all the pies?

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 01:55 (nine years ago)

Archer was the best analyst in the booth, but that was not a herculean task.

I admired AND hated Whitey Herzog, but i don't think he would've tolerated that in-game interview shit. ("I'm tryin' to work.") They coulda put up a still photo of Girardi and any of us would've been able to pipe in the answers.

Jessica Mendoza's mic is mixed so much lower than the other 2 , it's frustrating to try to catch what she's saying.

from BP game chat:

oldbopper (New Britain, CT): I remember when I was young, real men like Lew Burdette and Sandy Koufax would pitch complete game shutouts in WS Game 7 on 2 days rest.

AL Wild Card Game Chat: It was a very different era, and probably everyone on both of these teams would take Burdette deep on two days rest. - JP

ESPN remote from Manhattan is Foley's bar on 33rd Street, where there was a playoff FAP last year!

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 02:44 (nine years ago)

Boring game IMO, but in a good way -- Yanks haven't gotten anything going, Astros pitchers are shutting down everything they see.

i came in in the 7th, i'm guessing they didn't mention pitch framing at all? castro was excellent, he deserved credit for strike 3 to bird

they took the lifesize Don Zimmer cardboard statue out of the men's room tho; maybe that's a plus.

pitch framing was mentioned! first time hearing Jessica M at length, not bad at all.

i'd say i was lookin fwd to deGrom-Rasmus mane-off in the World Series, but Colby not in Jacob's league.

did i see Kissinger in the front row instead of his usual box? vell, he vill have to dream ov Cambodia and napalm tonight...

felt it was a pretty low class move to boo the shit out of the yankee players in the 8th and 9th but I cant say my team is above that sort of thing either..

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 16:33 (nine years ago)

ty mook

If Keuchel benefited from strikes that fell outside the zone’s malleable borders — and he did, though most of the calls were far from egregious — it wasn’t an aberration that can be blamed on one ump. Keuchel’s command is the best in baseball, and the combination of his edge-expanding locations and Jason Castro’s strong receiving has yielded extra strikes all season, less a sin specific to Eric Cooper than one endemic among umpires. Keuchel threw rulebook strikes less often this year than all but two other starters, and the Yankees chased rulebook balls less often than any other team. But respecting the rulebook is only so useful against a pitcher who routinely rewrites it.
