I'm going to be in Denver for the Rockies opening game vs the Padres. What do I need to know about both teams (best players, etc) so that I can have a cursory grasp on the situation?

My uncle used to take me to Padres games in the 80s but I haven't followed them since then and I don't know anything about the Rockies.

on the rockies side, nolan arenado is the young star. he's only 24, he has a lot of power (even by Denver standards, where there are a lot more home runs due to the elevation), and he's a brilliant fielder at third base.

the padres...are not good. Wil Myers is probably their best hitter. he used to be the #1 can't miss kind of prospect, and he's been decent, but he's also had injuries and isn't a great fielder. jon jay is a player that few people may much attention to, but you should definitely refer to him as "supreme court justice jon jay". everyone loooooves that joke, especially my girlfriend. it is funny every single time, believe me!

pitchers: barring injuries, san diego will probably go with James Shields as the opening day starter, even though Tyson Ross is arguably better. his nickname is "Big Game" James, even though he always loses the big games. the rockies will probably go with jorge de la rosa. the thing to know about all rockies pitchers is that they are all living in constant agony due to their having to pitch in denver, with its elevated home run rates. this is not where you want to pitch, if you're in the major leagues. so even if the rockies get wailed on, go easy on good ol' jorge de la rosa, he's trying his best out there.

one final thing to keep in mind is that both of these teams are projected to be awful in 2016.
